but these horrible things on my wheel arches are driving me insane



They're just glued on but will wreck the arch if I try to remove as they're stuck fast and they seem plasticky at the bottom but almost duct tape like at the top

Try a heat gun on them to get them supple and the glue warm, which should make them easier to peel off to replace without damaging the paint. Just dont melt your paint!
Use a hair dryer to gently warm them up without damaging any of the paint. The same goes for refitting the new ones, heat them as you apply them and use a fine mist of water on the arch to allow them to slide into position.
