valve clearance myth

i've been told time and time again over the years, about some  vw engines if the cambelt snaps its don't mean bang for the head, simple re aline and slap another one on and off you go, i under stand this could be true and half belive it but would not wont to find out the hard way

if this is indeed true have any off had this happen if so what model and engine code

or is this just some load of tosh made up by some billy bull hitter

 all mk1 engines are interference engines.
what this means is that the piston and valves share the same space. if the valve doesn't get out of the way the piston will hit it, hard, repeatedly.

some air cooled engines are not interference so yes if a belt went it would be a matter of swapping the belt and off you go.

please dont try and find out. it makes a mess.

lol no intention lol, is this the same for mk2 golfs as for me this is where this myth started off

I'd assume it is thesame as aren't half the mk2 engines the same as the mk1 excluding the 16v

well it all started on 1.8 8v carb engine on the mk2 this story/myth came alive and have heard it a few times since and with other engines

iīm sure that if you broke belt –>Broke engine in the vw golfs (petrol and diesel)
for example, my last car was a Ford Probe 24v, if you broke belt there isnīt problem because thereīs a lot of space in the ingition cam.

your cam shaft (only one on a golf) could have a galaxy in it the valves are still in the way of the piston or in this case hammer. yes mk2 engines are the same. almost all engines after about 1970 have been the same. means a higher compression can be acheived.

i thought it was just a load off tosh and not ones saying any different to what i thought,

I had all the bolts fall out of a vernier pulley years ago, so essentially the same as the belt snapping and everything was ok when i took the head off.
This was using a mk2 gti engine, is it ev? Early solid lifter type.
Anyway, i thought these engines were pretty much the same as a dx??

I had a belt snap in a 1979 1500gls at 60mph, stuck a new belt on and away it went, also had a belt strip teeth on a 82 1.8 gti stuck new belt on and away it went :dontknow:

Thats bloody clever considering vw never made on overhead camshaft aircooled motor????

Porsche did but they are interference engines!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just to be picky!

You can jump one or tooth and get away with it, as this just advances/retards the cam timing a bit. any further and it's bent valve city!!!!
