values of mk1 starting to go up?

has anyone noticed values of mk1 are starting to move up?

yeh
there is a few on ebay asking big money , but they have being on ebay for ages
i suppose its a bit like house prices , if they do go up its allright for those who have a MK1s & enjoy the rise but others lose out eg. mint mk1,mk2 escorts are well out of my price range now.

Generally prices go up as we get nearer to the better weather and a lot of people with better examples wouldnt sell over winter. As above some have been up for well over a year on ebay on and off, so the seller is prepared to wait till they get what they want, which is their choice.

All that can add up to a general impression prices are going up, not sure myself.

Could be that the price of older cars has generally increased. At the lower end of the market due to the scrappage scheme 400,000 sub £2,000 cars have disappeared meaning that anything left that's half decent is worth more. At the newer end of the market approx half a million fewer cars are being sold each year meaning half a million fewer coming onto the 2nd hand market meaning that they are more expensive so people are having to look at older stuff again driving up prices. Also due to both of the above manufacturers have got greedy and list price for a decent spec Golf or Focus is going on for £20,000! Makes a mint £3,500 MK1 GTI look cheap.

02 Clio DCIs are almost worth as much as 3 years ago when I traded mine in, knew I should have kept it, 3 years almost depreciation free motoring
 

it seems the Golfs that are in the £1000-£2000 seem to be static but the cars at the top end ie the concourse stuff was £3000-£4000 are now reaching the £5000-£8000 in the space of 18mths and the more trophy's you win at show and shine's you can recon adding £200-£300 per trophy you win throughout the year as your car gains provenance.

yeh, the only downside is that I can't go anywhere in my mk1 without somwone hounding me by saying "hey mate are you selling your car". thinks they can by it for nothing and flog it on at a profit.

if you want to sell.
simple fact buy in the winter sell in the summer and you cannot go wrong.
And yes agree with the above i am for ever getting stopped and asked to sell.I tell them yes if they have got 5k and they soon shut up

Thought that when I was in a position to get another one and spend a bit more that it wouldn't be a problem!  
I'm after a daily driver but there just isn't anything about in the south east. Hopefully something will turn up soon.
Can anybody suggest where to look?

if your after a golf gti there are plenty for sale at the minute.Pistonheads is a good place to look and edition38 and on here have seen 5 or 6 that are very very good for reasonable money.

what is reasonable money?

I was hoping to get something pretty original, clean and mechanicaly sound for around £2500.

personaly, the value will go up like the escorts did 5 years ago you could get a real nice refurb mk1 escort less then 3k a rotter will fetch that much now if its all in tack and mot'ed, not just couse of age, i think its a matter of factors that will make th car more vaulable, such as every year takes its toll on the less mantaind ones and some are scrapped and some are writting off, so each year less and less are about so that in turn makes them worth more

a good usable car is going to be worth good money.I remember buying a s1 rs turbo mint condition low mileage for 5k sold it for 9k a year later and now there going for anything up to 20k i have seen on some sites  
Any car that has such a big following will command good money rs is a prime example as i guess gti

the only other thng i will say, i was just looking on ebay, i got my golf cabby for £800 for the condition its in i feel i robbed the bloke, but it was on the money, 3-4 weeks later we had some nice sunshine, and the condition mines in i see on ebay 1600-1900 so weather plays a huge factor in some cases,

if i sell and wait again to the winter i could buy two lol

having not bothered lookin at them for a while now i'd agree the price has gone up, this time 4 years ago i started looking for mine and bought at the end of summer when i knew the bloke wanted to get rid as he didnt want it through winter again.

looking now i'd say prices have gone up about 20% + inflation. purely based on what i saw when i was looking for mine in terms of condition, spec and price.

There we go then.  Of course there going to go up, there is a decreasing number on the road year on year. The Scrappage scheme has accelerated this over the last 12 months.  I expect values to be about 25% higher than 2008 once the ecconomy recovers.

Page 12 of Classic Car Weekly (March 31 2010 No1020) has a 'Most Wanted' section and under that column Mk1 Golfs are listed. Price in March 2010 go between £2000 - £8000 but come December 2010 they are forecasting between £5000 - £12,000 for original, un-modified examples.

Now, who's going to take off the crystal lights, 17" alloys, bucket seats etc?!! Long live the standard form!!!

Does the article say the price differential between standard and modified cars is widening? Or that values in general, or for standard ones, are rising?

Values for standard, un-modified examples. It doesn't mention what modified ones would be worth.
I guess you'd have to look in the more modified publications as CCW tend to deal with original versions/restored models.

its all well and good the values going up but there has to be buyers out there in the first place.Its ok someone saying my car is worth 8000 but would anyone pay 8000 in the real world.Or is it worth 8000 as a valuation for insurance purposes?
