Valuation please? - '75 Mk1 LS 'Swallowtail'

Hi All,

It's unfortunately looking like I might have to let the old girl go, could anyone give me a rough idea as to a suitable asking price? Already have a potential buyer in mind! :)

It's is a 1975 Ancona Blue Mk1 Golf LS, 1.5L 3-speed auto, I think it's on around 36k genuine miles now - not bad for the 32 years old!

It's tax'd, has a long MOT, pretty much all the service history from new, drives great as you'd expect at this low mileage and is reliable - you could use it everyday. I've changed all the belts and service items recently and overhauled the brakes etc. - it needs nothing mechanically.

It has a few modifications - coilover adjustable suspension, twin Dellorto 40 carb's (bwarrrpp….) and non-standard wheels. Currently running on 14inch steels with good tyres but also have a set of Ronal Turbo's as per the pictures below. Has an early GTI steering wheels fitted but I also have the original.

Bad points - original paint isn't great in some places and it needs attention to the bodywork at the bottom of the doors as they are rusted through (gaffer tape on them in photo's). They would be fixable at a decent bodyshop, I've not got round to it yet as I've hardly used the car in the few years I've had it to be honest and it's just sat in the garage most of the time.

Pics below - any rough ideas on value please?

Thanks - I've had a look at the price guide, just wondered if it was up to date as pretty sure it's the same as a copy I had a few years back.
Might drop Rajan a line for advice then :)

gangstay - the car isn't generally for sale as yet as I do have a potential buyer in mind, but if it does become available I will let you know.

The price guide does not cover modified cars but you can PM me for general advice.

Not trying to be unhelpful but it may only be worth what someone will pay for it.

You see early stuff (and sometimes more unusual stuff) come up for sale and you'll get everyone saying "wow that's sweet" or "oooh, send me some pictures" and it still won't go.

I'm currently keeping my eye on a van on another forum that's unusual, well I think so anyway. It's been up for ages at a really cheap price and all he's got is "nice van" and "that's cheap"

Just my two pen'orth.

i agree the car is only worth what someone will pay for it - in that case i would pay ?1500 for it (if i had ?1500!)

if you just wanted rid i would say ?700 as ive seen series 1 golfs going for around that but if you wanted to hold on for the right price i would say put it up for ?2500.

its such a hard car to value but at the end of the day only let it go if you are a happy you got a good price.

I saw that car advertised, pretty sure it was a '77 wasn't it which is a totally different kettle of fish compared to a swallowtail?

700 is ridiculous! you could get that just selling the chrome off!

1500 is still too low in my eyes.

as said its a bit different to a regular series 1!

i would think 2.5 would be bottom end of the price scale, you might just have to wait a while for someone to buy it.

a swallow tail with 30 odd thousand miles, your not really gonan get another!

(i cant buy any more cars unfortunatly!)

not being funny but if i had ?2500 to spend on a mk1 i would buy a campaign. but thats just me, different people like different models.

i think ?700 would be a desperate price, was just giving an example. you will always get more for a car if you break it, you cant just add up the price of the parts and get your asking price!

its going to be one of those cars where you have to wait ages to find someone that is looking for one.

just put it up for what you would want for it. its very hard to value. failing that, put it on ebay and see what it goes for, things like this go mad on ebay!

Thanks for the replies, as above a 35k miles swallowtail isn't easy to find, but likewise isn't to everyone's taste.

It is the kind of car that suits a particular type of specialist buyer / collector / VW perv (!) and as mentioned could take a while to find a new home if I didn't already have a potential new owner lined up.  :)
