To Break or Not to Break?

Hi All,

I'm afraid I have a bit of a sad story….. [Start the violins!!]

About a year ago I came across a dusty '82 GTI in a garage owned by a friend of mine, I told a mechanic friend of mine about it and he persuaded me to buy it, on the understanding that he would help me restore it to it's former glory and I could learn a little about restoring cars in the process (I am a COMPLETE novice!!).

unfortunately his early enthusiasm in stripping the interior out of the car soon died and he lost interest - leaving me with a stripped out car in my garage that doesn't run (but does turn over) and hardly any mechanical skill to get it put right.

The girlfriend is not best pleased about the amount of golf in the garage so I am going to have to get rid (we already have 3 cars between us), so my question is, what's the best thing to do?, I don't know if there is much call for this kind of car, is it better to break it (bearing mind I'm limited by my knowledge to wheels, interior trim and generally bits that will unbolt/screw!), and scrap whats left or, attempt to sell it as is?

I've included some pics, any advice would be appreciated.

After :(

Thanks

Sell as-is. If you break it, you might make your money back but there will be weeks/months of people messing you around, watching ebay listings, trying to remove parts for people only to find they don't pay for them, countless trips to the post office with parcels, etc etc. Its okay if you have a couple of parts on the shelf but trying to get rid of a whole car in parts? No thanks!

I guess you can't take it on really slowly, and let others help (probably paid help, eg welding) as & when?

Afraid keeping it in the garage is no longer an option, I have another car that I can't drive over the winter so the plan is for that to take the golfs place.

I agree mate, only strip it if you know what your doing and how good the parts are that you are taking off.. As paul says it canbe a real nightmare.

Best selling like it is. where abouts are you tho, As i know someone that might be interested in it

Well he'd be an obvious one to take it, better than it going to a general Scrappy, but my next door neighbours mate is looking for a project, he was talking ford, but think I swayed him our way…

To be honest sell it in one hit, I have broken a few cars, and
sold mostly on ebay, and its not a quick option as paul_c mentioned.
Also cabriolets tend to go for more in bits (in my opinion) as you
can sell all of the seals seperately (?200+ for a good set of A pillar,
roof, door seals)

Stick it on ebay, it will sell no problems, it looks ok to me  :dontknow:

Best of luck
