tatty and rat mk1's
dubboy said
There is a big difference
Tatty = not having the money and/or skills to restore a Mk1 or quite happy using car in current form as a daily workhorse. Might have the intention to restore when time/money allows.
Ratty = deliberately making a Mk1 look crap by denting it, rusting it, writing on it, covering it with rubbish, etc. No intention to restore the car, more likely to get broken for parts or crushed by new owner.
To be honest does it really matter what people do with their cars if they want them mint and restored that is up to them if they want them ratty/tatty that is also up to them someone tell me what does it matter ??? the car is owned by them and they can do with it what they want… i dont see a big debate happening over how people decorate their houses.

My opinion applies equally to air-cooled, water-cooled, Ford, whatever.
When was I commenting on your car in particular? Why get so defensive?
Oxford dictionary "restore - return to a former condition, place, or owner"
Maybe you should know that 12 years ago I put a 2 litre Pack D 8V head in my Helios Campaign, 4 branch, Group A Supersprint, Bilsteins, big brakes and ran high 15s up the TRL 1/4 mile. Pretty quick back then. 4 years ago I ran one of the most modified show Mk1s around.
So before you get all defensive and start accusing individuals have a think!
who's getting defensive now!
I just said that I'll look at every mk1, I wont go and say that someone is deliberately making a Mk1 look crap as its their own opinion and if they like it and enjoy it, whats wrong with that..
You do now prefer the original style mk1's everyone knows that and we all know you like to keep them standard (ish), yes dubhit was nice, I remember being shown pics of it form wurthersea before you got it and Jaymac also showed it a lot before selling it on.. But you didnt keep hold of it in your stockpile tho!! Why, because it was modified and not standard???
Quoting the oxford dictionary on restore makes a mockery of what everyone does then, a lot of people say resto, but mean they are making the car better than it was when they got their hands on it..
I am replying to your post about ME. My original post was a general comment NOT about YOU.
I can like what I like and do what I like, I don't need an analysis about me from you based on your ASSUMPTIONS.
I am simply giving my opinion on the OP but you seem to have a problem with it or are you simply so fascinated about me that you have to make it personal every time?
Next time someone restores a fine painting I will punch a hole in the canvass, draw on a moustache and say "Look, I restored it!"

Here's another phrase….patina, sounds so much more sophisticated
I sprayed my mk2 golf van matt red for 2 reasons, firstly I hated the colour it was and secondly I'm not spending 2k on getting it painted when it only cost ?100 in the first place. Great daily, plenty of looks, 55mpg 8)
Good call, got a pic??
I drove past a matt mk2 van today! Spooky!!

I think the rat 'look' can go a bit far sometimes and I'm not always fond of cars that have been made to look ratty.
I prefer cars that have been weathered over time and are showing their years.
For me the epitome of rat is something like 'the bitch', a beetle which outwardly is faded and tatty but has had the floorpan completely resto'd to show standard.
My favourite rat mk1 is that blue american one.
With a sexy interior, still my favourite ever. 8)

But, if it was a barn find in a naturally beatup way, and your slammed it over some 13"'s, and cruised around in it, then thats cool 8)
The best effect, is with minimum outlay.
Plus you can never replicate naturally rattyness.

Forced rat look, looks crap, no skill or talent involved in putting your nans old suitcase on a roof rack from a ford cortina, and sticking all your old stickers all over it

that pretty much sums it up for me as well
finding an old wreck of a car that still drives and using it, rather than scrapping it, is cool.
