steering column splines
Hi all,
I just bought a steering wheel and boss kit for my mk1 however the splines are too big to fit my column which I think is 17mm ? I do have a spare column which has I think 30mm splines, Can someone tell me on the larger column is this just an adaptor that is fitted over the smaller type splines and could I remove it and put it on the column which is already fitted on the car ? Thus giving me the option of fitting my new wheel ? Also are these adaptors easy to remove ? is it just the metal part I need to add or is there something else and do you just tighten the nut down to push it into place? I know im asking a lot of questions but any advice would be much appreciated, Thanks in advance guys, Cheers Carl.

Tin tops and early cabs were small spline late cabs large and you can remove the large spline adaptor from late cabs sometimes easy but usually a quite tight and need a good bit of force. You can buy large or small boss kits for steering wheels
It dunt fit

I removed mine as had same issue. Run some wd40 down end of it. I think i used a 27mm spanner behind sleave lip then with an allen key bolt in end of colum pulled it off with a two legged puller.
Then you need plastic spacer from vw from early car.
The part number is in one of my posts. Ill have a look.

So does this mean that I can remove the adapter and replace the wheel with an earlier one, if I do this will the self cancelling indicators still work etc? Do I need to add or remove anything other than the adapter?

From what I understand its the adaptor and plastic collar behind it that need to be removed the bit that cancels the indicators is part of the wheel itself......I think!

Ye the ring on the wheel is removable and is the same part on both my wheels, so I think that will ok, just didn't want anything to be unsafe without the adapter, and wanted to gather all the parts needed if any, before I do the job, I'll report back when I've had an attempt.
