Preperation before storing
in january im moving to london so sadly i wont be driving my golf anymore but i wont be selling it thats for sure.
im going to store it at my parents house in a barn with one open face.
does anyone have any tips on how best to store the car so that it actually still works when i decide i want to drive it again?

Coat it with wax the tinned stuff, and put a smear of grease on the chrome bits that will help it, anyway how long do you think your going to be away for mate??

i brought a airchamber from the nec,car inside,zip it up,clean and damp free,well worth the money,if its in a barn the wind will get to it anyway so that helps,dont cover the paint it may sweat,leave the windows open 15mm to let the air through,remove battery,make shure theres clean antifreeze in the block,if its going to be left for more than 12 months,use axel stands to stop flat spots on the tyres,should be ok with that

cheers for the advice im not sure how long it will be there for cant really afford to drive it in london so depends how the move goes i guess but i should be back to check on it on regular occasions so prob give it a quick spin once a month or so.

Don't leave anything on your seats, and tuck the rear lap belt under the seat cushion so it's not on top of the seat.
It might be worth buying a trickle charger if you have access to power in the barn - otherwise remove your battery and leave that on a trickle charger elsewhere.
You can find a wealth of information about 'laying-up' on any classic car sites.
Google 'laying up' and there's tonnes of info.

All above are good points just one I will add if any sunlight can enter barn cover the dash and seats with some dust sheets or old blanket to stop sunlight fading upholstery and cracking dash.

should the petrol tank be full or empty? and im guessing i should give it abit of a service before hand

Bert Tell me a little bit more about this tent,
Was the car outside or in doors? how did you power it, and was it expensive to run ?
I,v never had one but heard a little bit about them and a lot nieve.

i had the sports car one,nice fit in my garage,
the car is garaged but in most garages away from houses it gets damp,the garage is watertight but not damp proof,the tent stops the damp by keeping the air moving,also theres no dust as the air is filtered,
as ive got no power up there i just use big 90AH diesel batteries,they last average 8 days each,so every 7 days i swap them over,whilst one is running the tent the other has a very slow charge for a week,i know otheres with the tents and they love them,you can use a bank of batteries that will last 6 weeks or so but im close to the garage so i just go swap the one over,well worth it if you want to protect the car,my engine bay was wet the one winter it was so damp out,and the alloy turns furry
its not a problem now :wink: oh and i charge the batteries at work 8)

Thanks mate, but can you buy one that can be used outside?
and do you have to disconnect the car battery, let the hand brake off, drain the fluids ,etc. sorry mate i know, but i,m intrigued. and your right it sound like a dame good idea.

cheap plywood. build a car size box. line with insulation, cover it with plastic sheet. paint plywood with something like shed paint etc. drive car in do as suggested above. chuck a couple of silca damp absorbers in and close the box. job done.
