Power roof issue

I came to close the roof this morning…pressed the button and nothing completely dead not noise no nothing. am I right in sayings its relay 79 that's for the roof are there other fuses any ideas.

so far I've checked the switch ( swapped the window button with the roof button and the roof button works, but a window button on the roof circuit doesn't so not a button issue). The usual way to get the roof up or down. " turn ignition key but don't start car turn key back. Press button nothing happens. There's no light on the button like the window buttons so its just looks like there is no power to the switch. I checked where the fuses/relay should be there's 2 fuses in position 17 above the main fuse box (not even sure i'm looking in the correct place as I've seen conflicting information). There's hydraulic fluid in the reservoir. I have tried wiggling the key in the ignition barrel. The golf manual says that the fuses are automatic and when they sense a load they switch off for a few minutes??????? I'm out of ideas so any help would be great

Insert key into barrel DO NOT turn at all.
Leave key in barrel and press button.
Mine only works with key in barrel.
If I turn it it doesn't work. There's a limiter to prevent circuit operating with the engine running or keys turned.
Make sure fluid is checked with the roof in the down position.
Thermo fuse should be on separate holder above fuse box.

Hi ive tried all of the options. all I can see above the fuse box are various relays 2 blade fuses and a odd silver slimmish thing that may or may not be some kind of fuse (thermal or otherwise) right at the end. do they just pull out or is there a knack to removing relays and the odd fuse thing

The silver thinnish things are the thermo fuses. If you have 2 one is for the power windows.
It looks like you may need to give all the relays a wiggle. The relays are located in the boot. Above the rear turret.
These can get a bit wet from a leaking hood and corrode inside. Get yourself some switch cleaner and give all the switches and relays a clean.
Have a look at this.
I had similar but wiggling the key cured it, could be dirt down to the switch.
You'll probably need to get the multimeter out and trace the supply to the switch, but look at the wiring plugs from the fuse box, plus any earths.
If you have supply to switch you can go from there.
I don't know if the power window switches are the same configuration pin out wise. So not sure on that one.

Late cabbies have the press stud limiters fitted on the upper section of the rear seat trims for the matching flaps on the later tonneau covers. Make sure these are not wet.
You shouldn't be able to raise the roof with engine on as a safety feature, lol doing 60mph and lets put the roof up or down lol….only kidding but you get the picture.
It looks like power comes via ign switch terminal SU and also at terminal P to control unit in back of boot.
Supply from battery is via thermo fuse at top of fuse box 17 20amp, then onto control unit which is in the back of the boot.

Hi I've found a thermal fuse and its completely in the wrong place (not in position 17 if i'm looking correctly) I do however have 2 blade fuses where a believe postion 17 should be between a couple of relays and they are fine. not sure if someone fitted a blade fuse instead of a thermal one. I'm no auto sparky but I cant see anything obvious. I may have to take it to an expert because i'm lost now any chance of a photo of your fuse box to see if its the same as mine (sames fuse relays etc)

had a good look and found took out the silver thermo fuse cleaned up the contacts etc but no use still not working your fuse box appears to slightly different to mine

Yes it's confusing as I took the info from the Bentley manual, so there were slight changes in years.
I pulled up 1991 as that was my year of car, don't think there was that much difference for later models.
These are funny cars at the best of times lol.
It's a case of seeing where what goes etc. Have you cleaned the bank of relays up in the boot?
Checked all plugs are correctly clipped in place.
There's not many places as such just where power comes in so tracing that with the meter and you should see where it disappears.
If it's the IGN switch, would this affect other stuff that's switched live?

ragards switched live when I came to fit a new cd/mp3 player the original power and ignition switch live wires had been bypassed I put it back the way it should be and nothing worked. So put it back as the last owner had it and it worked again. theres a power cable directly from the battery and the ignition cable also connected to it . I thought he may have done it so that you didn't have to have the key in the ignition to have the radio on. turns out it could have been an issue with something else. Its really frustrating as ive spent up on what I can afford this year and although I can still open and close the roof manually its annoying. by the way thanks for the badge refurb kit I got from you a few weeks ago they look x100 better……. anyway theres definitely no power going to the roof switch and tested it with a spare switch totally dead. I tried wriggling the key no luck either. multimeter time I think

Hi thanks I may take you up on the offer, I've ordered a new thermal fuse so going to test that first. Im no expert so any help would be great thanks Chris

Good News i'm a happy camper I've fixed my roof issue. Due the general butchery of the original wiring by a previous owner the Ignition switch live have been cut and then spliced together again?? when I had the head unit out recently I must of pulled them apart. I found the wires again and now all is well.
