Polishing the Engine bay.

Busy cleaning the Engine bay of my brand new Golf (well 1990, but new to me), I noticed my wife and neighbour laughing. 'Why are you cleaning in there, nobody will see it anyway'?, ' The rest is falling to bits and you have spent a couple of hours polishing the engine' They asked.

OK am I mad? Is this normal? Am I the only person that likes to work on a clean engine, if not is it only VW owners? If so is it only Mk1 owners? Or do Corsa owners and Fiesta owners fondle their greasy bits as my wife puts it :-)

Lastly if we have the urge to polish our engines why did VW leave so many fiddly bits so we rip our hands to bits trying to get that last bit of grime out?

i started cleaning mine a while back and still need to finish its pretty much got 26 years of grime around there and lots of pointy bits which like to jump out at my arms so i didnt manage to last that long

i'd say just some sort of metal polish and a hell of a lot of elbow grease. been using autoglym metal polish on a load of bare metal pieces recently works a treat.

excuse the rusty starter motor… but for a 26 year old engine bay i dont think it looks too shabby

everythings been stripped and powder coated where possible, bay was sprayed, engine full overhaul… not a show bay by any means but deffinitely pretty :D
