MK1 feel
a question for the forum regarding your mk1
does your mk1, when going over a pot hole sounds like a hard bang almost like its hitting a brick or curb ?
also going around corners my steering feels a bit juddery
im newish to the mk1's so just wanted to ask
Is this just the mk1 feel, or can this be sorted ?
is it the suspension or something else ?
i have got a late VWmk1 cabriolet
cheers

Jay, i have got exactly the same problem and had my car for over 1.5 years and not done anything about it yet, its also a late cabby (K plate).
Reading a few posts lately i think it may have something to do with the top mounts which i think mine could do with changing, i will also be interested to see peoples response to the thread
if you do a search someone recently did a thread showing some pics of top moutns before and after - broken / fixed
cheers
Rich

Had this with mine (also late cabriolet) and have just replaced the top mounts and bump stops, which have made it a hell of a lot better.
Here's before:
And after:
There's still a bit of a noise over rough ground and after another check I've found a bit of play in the ball joints. I'm replacing them this weekend so watch this space…

Mine does it too, but only over potholes. Big bang and it feels like the wheel hasn't moved on the suspension at all, just whacked against the side of the hole. No RS001s for me till I sort it I think!
Oh, and find a spare grand or so…

Mine feels "raw" but totally solid over bumps and going round bends.
The only thing I can feel through the steering wheel is the contours of the road and that.

main point is make sure they are FEBI top mounts, stamped ontop.
People have bought others and seen them report one has gone in a metter of weeks/few thousand miles, but other one fine.

I've replaced both ball joints, and fitted new ARB mounts whilst I was there. The knocks have now completely GONE! :cheer:
So replacing the top mounts, bump stops and ball joints has cured it for me. If anyone still has the knocking after doing the top mounts then I'd check for play in the ball joints.
I also managed to replace my passenger side top mount and bump stop without unbolting the strut from the hub.
I unbolted the top nut on the strut and jacked up the car, the spring slowly decompress' as the body lifts and the suspension assembly lowers. After removing the wheel it's possible to remove the old top mount and bolt the new one in place.
Then raise the suspension assembly with another jack beneath the wishbone, you'll need to align the strut to pass through the middle of the top mount and then loosely refit the top nut. Double check the spring is seated properly in the strut, then remove the jack under the wishbone, refit the wheel and lower the car, tighten up the top nut on the strut and that's the passenger side done.
You can't do this on the drivers side though, due to the thicker driveshaft that doesn't allow the strut assembly to drop low enough.

where did you get your ARB mounts from GAV?have you got a link to them?
Think I will get these done 1st when the engine mounts are done this week..
When I look under at the suspension, wishbones, strut leg, and ARB etc etc.. I really get the urge to strip everything, powdercoat and re bush

I bought the ARB bushes from AVS http://www.vwspares.co.uk/g1csuspension.php and I bought new mounting brackets (that bolt through the wishbone) from http://www.volkswagen-classic-parts.de/ (click on the 'New Products' link). Crazy Quiff has some non genuine mounting brackets too.
I know what you mean about powder coating everything! I just wish I had time to freshen parts up when I'm doing the jobs but it has to go back together quite quickly as it's my daily!
