Missing my golf
My GX is in at the bodyshop at the moment undergoing a few repairs to make sure it looks mint and lasts years! It's been there a week now and I've been driving my brother's Vauxhall Gashtra. To make matters worse some egit knocked a wing mirror off it the other day in the car park at work and I went to the scrappy today and had to pay ?20 for a new one! I popped in to see Arnie (my golf) in the bodyshop on the way back from the scrappy. The work seems to be progressing well, and I can't wait to get him back!! I'll post up some pics when I get him back for you to drool over. But in the mean time if you want to add to this thread with pics of your golfs, especially if it's a GX, for me to drool over and to tide me over till I get Arnie back, then please feel free!!!
btw, I'm giving Arnie a good whip with the GXing stick, putting back the half arch spats which had been swapped for full arch GTI items and hopefully the original steel wheels with chrome hubcaps if I can get them refurbed cheaply or do it myself!
Show me some GX love!!!!

I've had my GX for 18 months now. I've gone down a slightly different route to yourself and have removed things rather than put them back to stock.
Here's some pics from when I bought it.
I've probably got some grey arch spats out the back you can have- they're not mint because I managed to snap the tabs on the back getting them off and one's got a bit of a scrape along the edge.

ooooh that's ace!! The best colour too!! I've just ordered some new arch spats from Crazyquiff. They're black, I think. But I think that's correct - as far as I can surmise from the parts catalogue, the bumpers came in a few shades, of which the GX had dark grey, but the arch spats, or "stone guard corners" as the ETKA terms them, seem only to have been available in black. And now not at all. Lord knows where crazyquiff magics them up from! If you've got grey arch spats, they've probably just faded over the years!!

nope the arch spats are ment to be grey. sorry bud. they match the bumpers.

Oh well, I think I was lucky to find a set in any colour, they've always been out of stock every time I've tried before. But where is the evidence for this? Like I said, the ETKA only lists them as a single colour, unlike the bumpers which it divides up into graphite, satin black, and dark grey for vaious models. Saying that the set I bought from Scouse at Ultimate Dubs does look to be grey, though I won't be using them as they are pretty shabby. He saw me coming, I think. But the new ones at crazyquiff look to be black. Here's my theory then - originally, all of the arch spats were grey. At some point during the production run in South Africa, they were changed to black, and it is these versions that Crazyquiff acquires and sells from his website. I may be completely wrong, but it's fun trying to piece together the strands of this little mystery. I feel like Sherlock Holmes.
Maybe I shouldn't have had that pint at lunchtime.

Yup, just got mine in from the back garden and it's definitely grey, even the inside where it's not gonna be bleached by the sun.
It does say on ETKA that the part was dropped on 15/08/1987 and replaced with a number of parts so may have changed colour then.
Thinking about it, the only models with the satin black bumpers were GTI, GTD and LX. Those models will have come with the full arch trims which are satin black themselves. Therefore you won't get a model with small trims and black bumpers or full flares and grey bumpers which means you don't need to differentiate by colour for the small arch trims.
Hmmm, you're probably right then.

Just been to see 'Arnie', speaking to the bodyshop guy (Andy) and he says you prefer to take the new paint no higher than the side trim, I think you should go with taking the paint up to the roof guttering, that way it's a lot easier to blend in. I'm going to drop Andy some trim clips off for the lower n/s side trim on Friday, he couldn't get the knack of the manual choke tonight and my advice on how to start it didn't help much  , how do you start it? :dontknow:

Oh, well it was his recommendation to paint up to the side trim, he thought that he could get it close enough that the line of the trim would fool the eye and you wouldn't see the difference. He hasn't mentioned to me since that he forsees a problem. Hmmm, I guess if it looks awful I'll have to go back and get the top half done as well! But I'm not made of money you know!!
Regards starting it, if I'm starting from cold I pull the choke fully out, press the accelerator down once and release it, depress the clutch and then turn the key - it almost always fires up straight away like this.
Cheers for the trim clips, I was gonna order some from Inchcape so I shan't need to bother now!!
btw, I saw a white A-reg cabby on ASDA car park this afternoon - is that anyone you know?

Andy was suggesting going to the roof tonight, so maybe he's had a change of heart, it would also take out some of the small touch up pen marks :y: .
Regards starting it, it started but was lumpy, just a case of us not knowing the starting procedure…..no two Golfs are the same
I've seen a white cabby going towards Newport from Chetwynd a few times, but never caught them parked up :?
I was going to take a photo of her for you and post it up, but the battery on the camera died  .

Was there really any need to dredge up a thread that's nearly a month old to vent your anger at what was really just a throwaway, jocular remark, and not intended in any way as a personal attack? I don't think many people reading my post would imagine that I was "slating" you, but if that's how you feel then I apologise.
