Insurance scammed on my Mk1! BEWARE!

Hi
As many on here will know I had the unfortunate event of running into the back of someone in my Mk1 Cabrio on the way back from the Milton Keynes meet way back in May.
Well the good news is the car is all fixed now and looking better than ever.
Bad news is that I got a visit from an insurance fraud investigator….
It seems the whole accident was set up to get me to pile in the back of this car and for the 3 occupants to claim whiplash!
The investigator is very sure of this being the case due to various things that happened at the scene (a decoy car in front of the car I hit was used as an excuse for him stamping on his brakes which sped off from the scene and other suspicious things).
Unfortunately the investigator says that it is nearly impossible to prove these cases in court, especially as I don't have the no. plate from the decoy car. Therefore I'm likely to be held responsible for these whiplash claims…..even tho the accident was between 5-10 mph!!
So if this ever happens to anyone else do try your hardest to get the no. plate from the car right at the front if you get the chance….I had no chance at all, it was gone up a side road the moment I made contact!
Also the only thing you can do to try and prevent this happening to you is leave a massive (and I mean massive!!) gap between you and the car in front at all times. I was a long, long way behind and still couldn't stop my MK1 in time!!
I hope I'm the only one on here that ever has to post something like this.
Cheers
Mark

Thats terrible news what a bunch of ***** did the guys in the car you hit get out of the car after you hit them. They couldn't be in too much pain then.

You should say you didnt think they were wearing seatbelts, or the driver was on the phone.

You would probably be better off aiming for the kerb and missing the car.

Thankfully thats what insurance is for.

a few years ago in my mk2 i had been out very late becuase it had snowed and was caught out by it, i was only able to drive at slugs pass, 10-15 in straight line etc, and i was about 4-5 miles from home when i came round a cornor not very tight but long enough not to see round it, anyway i went round and found 3 crashed cars in the middle off the road and a couple of cop cars had just arrived with the people all standing round, it was ether plough into the cars or kerb it up  deciding to go for the kerb for less chance off harming one of the plums just standing round there cars looking gormless

i damaged the wishbone, wheel, wing and arche  i got out was mental when i saw the state off the car

at the time off the crash the police said i had nothing to worry about i could cliam off there insurance as it was blocking the road and the conditions etc and be gracefull enough to ditch the car up the kerb to avoid harming people

a few days later after consulting with the insurance i could nothing about it as i had not gone into there cars  had i gone ploughing straight into them i would have had grounds to a claim

so kerbing a car to avoid harming people and bending metal is a bad option in my eyes m8

but on a brighter note had i hit one off them and then there car, when i would off come out off prison for manslaugter my car would off least been repaired, as mixers just found out insurance companys are a joke full stop

Yeah, all 3 occupants got out of the car and were fine at the scene…I even asked if all were ok, and the one in the back was definitely not wearing a seatbelt. I told this to the fraud investigator and he said it may help a bit to reduce the amount of claim against me.
We'll see!

there was a programme on about this last night on bbc1 last night @10:35pm its on the iplayer now and worth watching, cops, cars and criminals, where people were being paid by claims companies £500 a time to have accidents 'crash for cash'  the 1 guy who got caught was known to have done 97 crashes in 12months

The seatbelt is used in mitigation, and reduces their claim value by typically 25% in most cases where it can be shown to have exacerbated their injuries (in some rare cases, it can be proven that not wearing a seatbelt reduced injuries - think "being thrown from car when hitting a lamp post that then penetrated the passenger compartment").

The whiplash claims will be investigated; criminal charges are another matter. Chances are they'll get very little but it doesn't help you in terms of having had a claim (the severity of your claim doesn't actually make any difference to you though, whether it's a bumper tap or writing something off and causing loads of injuries, if it's an accident that's what the insurance is for).

without condoning the actions of toss sirs, you should actually leave a big enough gap from the car in front to avoid an accident as a matter of course.
what was the name of the claim firm? i could do with a couple of prangs.

Unfortunately if you're following someone and they stamp as hard as they can on the brakes completely unexpectedly then sometimes you don't stand a chance of stopping in a Mk1.
I left a huge gap and the car in front of me stopped with it's ABS like I've never seen a car do before….I swear the back wheels of it came off the ground!!  I thought I was gonna stop in time….alas no!!

Sorry to hear your misfortune, BigM. At least your car's fixed and you can put it behind you.
That programme on telly last night showed a chap who ran into the back of the scammers because they slammed on the brakes but the brake lights didn't come on! I wouldn't take responsibility for that one lying down! I know police only attend a crash if it's major and blocking the road etc but I'd damn well make sure they turned up to inspect the other car's brake light bulbs, that's if they hadn't been removed completely (even if I had to tell them there'd be a GBH if they weren't there in 5 minutes!)
P.S - I think the claim firm involved in the scam was shut down, Wooders

Police turn up to all Personal injury accidents. If someone claims to be injured call the police as a report has to be completed. The scammers will not hang around if police are called. Also make sure you know who the driver was as they will swap over.
