I have a 1980 series 1 golf gti 1.6 5 speed which was registered at the start of January 1980.
Me too. Registered 1/1/1980. They cant have made many 5 speed ones. Surely there must be some way of finding out. Anyone suggest anything please???

Anyone know how many 5-speed GTI series 1 cars were sold in the U.K at all please???
Around the 2500 mark with the 5-speed box
RHD GTi production started in June 1979 with the 4-speed box - around 1000 were made before the change to the 5-speed box in August 1979. As a consequence GTis with the 4-speed box are harder to find.
Rarer still are the 22 LHD GTis VW officially imported in 1978 before RHD was available for those that could not wait..some of them even had metal bumpers….

Is there anyway to find out how many series 1's are still left and not scrapped? Just out of interest.
I had a good look around the car today. It has rotted badly around the sunroof. The roof is like a tea bag. Sunroof channels have holes. Sunroof is scrap. Both doors have gone inside and out. Under both rear side windows has gone. Front wings shot. But the sills aren't to bad. There are holes in the rear inner arches but the rest seems quite solid. Underneath is better than the bodywork. I have stripped the roof lining out and will strip the interior ready to weld the roof. I will save this car!
I need someone with a scrap car to cut some metal out to weld to this one. I could make the pieces but to get the curves (especially under the rear windows) will take alot of time and the less filler I need to use the better.
Any ideas who could cut me some bits for some cash anyone? Need a sunroof as well. Are series 1 sunroofs the same a series 2???
