how do you drive your gti?

ok been thinking when am normlly driving around town and i wanna boot it it takes a few sec to get to a speed, but last night after being pissed off (cause my battery died due to me not driving it very far and my pump ant priming so alot of cranking) anyway after jump starting it i thought al go for a long drive got in car was warmed up so got on the dual carrige way and gave it some in every gear and oh my it was brilliant never felt like that in the past 6 months av had it on the rd.

so am asking should these gti's be driven hard in every gear or do i need to set mine up on the rollers, as after i got it on the rd i had it set up(timing and mixture) at a carb centre.

oh btw it was a 1.8 gti but some put the 1.6 gti init.

thanks

I wouldnt recommend ragging it in every gear too often! unless you have a healthy bank balance?

they can take a fair bit of stick but dont forget its 20 odd years old!! bit of restecpa ya kna man  to much abuse and the gearbox will explode first!!! weakest part of any Dub

I agree with TOTR, you gotta give them respect, ok if you drive slow everywhere it'll stiffen up, so they need opening up now and then, I drive mine no different to anything really, through towns and built up areas nice and gentle, then twisty country roads or dual carriagewys, i push the revs closer to the red line before changing, mainly just 2nd and 3rd where the un is tho

My gearbox is like stirring porridge anyway..  :banghead:

You need to rev them, mine's running a 4-1 tubular manifold on it which helps.

They were built to be grand tourers, indended for the derestricted german autobahns.  To drive them at 45mph tops is totally against the spirit of the car.

They can withstand ALOT of abuse and parts are so cheap and abundant, it the worst happens, it won't be off the road for long.

When I've got a taxed and tested Mk1 (which is only about 50% of the time 'coz I tend to have several cars on the go all at the same time) I tend to use it as my primary everyday driver so don't kick it's head in everywhere.  Saying that; quiet road, nice day, good tune on the radio, you hardy have a choice but to open the throttle!

If you never drive your GTI hard ever, sell it to someone who will use it as it was designed to be used and buy a GLS.  Most GTI owners, even those with a responsible faceade, will crack that knowing grin when you ask them what happens when you bury the pedal in the carpet ;)

thought the GTI throttle was either an on or off affair! didn't know there was anything in between, might experiment with that at some point
