Hello there,
I had this problem too, I changed the metering head, the warm up regulator but it ended up being the fuel accumulator, now I have a spare metering head and warm up regulator!

its almost certainly the fuel pump accumalator. This sits behind the fuel pump underneath the car, just follow the outlet pipe from the fuel pump it will lead you to the accumalator, and it maintains a steady fuel pressure of about 50psi when the pump is off (thats from memory, away at the moment so cant check) its unlikely but a small fuel leak (ie: one you cannot detect by eye) is responsible but that is unlikely, only had that fault once in 25 years! you would be well to tackle the job with a new fuel pipe to hand as well because they corrode like a b@#$% so what should be an easy job can turn into a nightmare! crazy quiff has fuel pipes on his site but check first you may be lucky. It is possible to check the fuel standing pressure but you will need test equipment to do it. If your anywhere near norfolk i have a spare but i wont be home for a while yet

Do it once and do it right! ok, we've identified the problem, lets not make it worse by guessing……… Identifying the sympton is not the same as understanding the cause :)

Can be lots of things this is a common fault with many different solutions.

Have you just got it or is it a new fault?
Will it start if you run power straight from the battery to the starter while its hot?

2nd that on my 83 gti, poor guy before me payed out hundreds on new accum and tests and i got hold of it and plopped a new non-return valve on the end of the pump and she was fine… cheapest thing to have a go at.

Did you do a system pressure test to see if it held up before you changed the accumulator ?

As the others have said if it doesn't, first change the one way valve on the end of the pump the then accumulator.

Could also be leaking injectors, simple test is to pull them out after running and put them in jars, leave for a while, there should be fuel leakage.

Could also be the fifth injector running permanently making it starting far too rich when hot and hence not starting. Again an easy check.

I would also get control pressure readings for cold and hot, might be that the hot control pressure is too high or low which will cause lean or rich hot starting, the WUR on trolls this.

How is your battery ? Sometimes it can as simple as the engine not being turned over fat enough magnifys other issues.

Cheers,
Ade

When you change Non return valve (NRT ) be sure to fit new copper washers on the banjo bolt and get it tight first time petrol in your eyes will sting ! Loads of pressure build up on that join if you have to undo because of a leak crack a union under the bonnet on the metering head to realease it first ! Hope that made sense !   ;0)
