Gti 1600cc
hello, this post is probably in the wrong place. Any infor is greatly appreciated.
Im keen to buy a Mk1 Gti and i think ive found a good one, only things is its a 1.6 and not the 1.8 that i had assumed all Gti's were.
Is there any down sides to owning a 1.6 over the 1.8 besides the obvious?
is it likely to be better on fuel?,
what is the power of the 1.6?
It is a 1979 W Reg.
Real good condition and well looked after, no rust!, no orginal alloy wheels, (has BBS alloys), no rev counter?
Its Orange, is that an original colour? or Faded Red?
Any bargaining information to bring the price down?
Thanks for any replies!

1979 ey? Nice series one. I'd go for it.
Well the 1.8 obviously has a better top end (not that you will use it i suppose), better torque and better acceleration (0-60 it is extremely similar to the 1.6)
Most people say the 1.6 engine is smoother and has a nicer "throatier" sound to the engine.
I dont really know much else. Im sure dubboy could tell you alot about the difference, especially in the Series 1.
Hope that helps

Hi mate
I will start, but ime sure you will get more reply with a bit more info…
They were 1600 to start off with then changed over to 1800`s on
a "Y" reg?
Colour would be Mars red (normally turns pink) with age, not
sure on figures but ive had both, fuel is hardly any diffierence
but there is a power difference, some people prefer the 1600`s
as they are a bit more revvy, but its personal choice really.
As for the rev counter, I thought all GTi`s had one as standard
so it might be worth checking the Log book to make sure.
Failing that its had a new dash at some point, also worth checking
the "buyers Guide" on the home page.
Good luck
dibbler

I think mars red on the series 1 was a slightly different to the series 2 paint. My first S1 was Mars red and it is pretty orangey.
Being a GTI it should have a rev counter. What type of clocks does it have…….are they the conical sytle clocks or are they the later ones with the MFA?? It also should have Red and Black Check seats and smaller tail lights at the back than later MK1'S.
Can I ask how much it's up for sale for??? have you got photo's……we might be able to help you further.
P.S I loved my 1.6 GTI, great little revvy engine.
PPS. Wasn't old W reg 1980-81???

My 1st Mk1 experience was a W reg 1.6 gti that my mate owned for a year or so.
We all thought it was great and it was the most popular choice to go out in out of everyones cars at the time.
I thought it was fairly quick (although we were all a lot younger then) and I can tell you for sure it was defo quicker than my 1.8 gti cab I have now, although it is probably the slowest gti anyones ever known lol.

thanks for the help, thats great.
ive got a few photo's but they might not be of any use, how can i post them so you guys can have a look?
the car is in excellent condition, with absoloute no body rust, new rear tail gate, spare wheel well is pristine. all the decals are on the car.
interior looks like other GTi pictures ive seen. The car needs wiring for the dash stereo/speakers. there is no extra dials in the centre console.
Ive been told he'll take ?2450 for the car, with 86k on the clock, it runs and drives beautiful. The guy is genuine and i know him quite well. TOTALLY Tempted!

Im sure it should have a rev counter if its a GTI, and its not 79 on a W. W is 80-81. Like mine. And in MY opinion thats a lot of dosh for that car. However, if youve got it, i might sell you mine.

is it sitting too high in the arches for standard?. Compared to some of the standard cars it does sit very high, or is that just the tyres? I understand some cars are lowered.
How much do you reckon its worth?
The car is very clean, when the pictures were taken it hadnt been wahsed so it doesnt look as good as it could.

Looks clean….looks like it just needs a couple of finishing touches and a polish!!
If it's as clean as you say, 2-2.5K. I'd try and get him down to 2k if you can. The Wheels, Seats and Dash aren't original if it's an s1 (?), so there's a good bargaining tool….and you can always sell them on, if your looking to return to stock.
I can't make out if there big or little lights at the back. If there big, it might have had a replacement rear panel??

thats a series 2, big rear lights - seen on last picture, it has the leather look dash which is bigger than an s1, and it has an expansion tank under the bonnet, all series 2 only parts.
Still a reasonable car, and don't forget early S2s arn't that common either, plus feature alot of parts which people consider to be better or more improved than a series 1.
should without fail have a rev counter unless the dials have been replaced with a lesser spec'd models speedo and clock unit :dontknow:

As said, it's an S2 and as such is quite over-priced at 2.5k. The 1600 engine is fantastic rev-happy fun, but don't pay over the odds for it.
Also bear in mind that it looks like it's been resprayed (the pillars behind where the badge sits on the front grille are red, and not black as they should be).

Looking at the price guide ( The Mk1 Golf Owners Club ) for a 1981 1600, it's gotta be valued somewhere inbetween the ?1000-?2000 mark.

So the car is an S'2 Golf GTi, which did come in the 1600 engine. Does it then appear from the pictures to have the correct interior and dash for that version, but not the correct alloys?
Yes, the car was restored almost 6 years ago, and so the paintwork was resprayed.
Ill try and find out if it has a rev counter today and look for other bargaining possibilities.
Thanks for all the advice!
one more question!
If the car has mint body work (which i beleive it does), what would you all expect to pay for it, if it was your money?
2k at the very most,
<2k becuase it isnt completely original,
or >2k because the body work is very very clean, and it runs really well?
Cheers!

The interior and dash are correct for that colour and year.
The wheels are more desirable than the original 9-spokes, so if anything they'll add to the value rather than detract from it.
Double check the inner wings and arches, top of suspension turrets, joins between front panel and wings, and rear panel and wings, and fuel filler neck to be sure that it is truly rust free.
If the bodywork is completely mint then I would pay somewhere between ?1.5 and 2k for it, but no more.
