Front drivers quarterlight replacement

Hi all,

I've already posted this in 'parts wanted' but wondering if anyone can help ASAP.. Need to secure car!!

Today someone decided to smash my front driver side quarter light on my 92 Sportline. I was parked in East London and think as there was nothing in the car, they might have been trying to take it for a spin! I reckon the Clifford's whaling must've scared the idiots off, but that aside I'm left with a lot of shattered glass and the need to put a new one in ASAP. The original was tinted.. looks kinda greeny blue. Anyone have one or know where I can go to get one. I'm working in Hemel Hemstead over the weekend but am based in North/East London - and don't mind a little drive.
Oh and it looks like they're easy to fit in a Cabby without removing inner door trim? Am I right in thinking this? Just wind window all way down and remove screw attaching top trim to pillar? Please let me know if you've done this before..

Thanks in advance,

Arran

hello buddy, sorry to hear some a**h*** has tried to nick your car, the planet really does contain some first class idiots.
The news doesnt get much better either.
The glass will be green tinted, if you look at the window designation markings you will see "TINTED" just below the kite marks, its not too hard to locate a replacement though, evil bay will undoubtably have some? but it may be worth a phone call to a few autoglass specialists.
The door card needs to be removed, then the main glass needs to come out, you may be unlucky to find the glass gripper on the main window is in a poor way (rust etc) and they can be awkward to release there grip, and can also be difficult to reattach but thats something that needs to be dealt with once your in that far.
The main runner that you mention goes from the top of the door to the bottom of the door.
To remove this, the screw you mentioned needs to come out and the rivet in the bottom of the door needs to be drilled out, this holds the runner that holds the quarter light in and allows the glass to go up and down smoothly.
Then you can remove the quarter light rubber and ultimately the remants of your old glass.
Refitting is pretty straightforward just be careful not to force the long runner and be methodical otherwise the glass will not be operate smoothly up and down, its an easy piece of channel to twist especially if your not patient because its easy too force it but not so easy to put it all back as VW intended.

good luck and sorry to hear about your experience :(

Do it once and do it right! ok, we've identified the problem, lets not make it worse by guessing……… Identifying the sympton is not the same as understanding the cause :)
