Engine bay respray

Thinking if having my engine bay resprayed. Does anyone have idea of costs or what they've paid. Would it be best for engine out or take everything off the engine and just leave the block in this would be easier for me

You'd need to take the engine out, and remove a lot of other components, to do the job properly.

as paul c says, empty the bay, needs to be cleaned and degreased then sanded down so the paint will stick without problems, thats how im doing mine

Its going to cost a few quid to get a garage to do it, can you not have a go
yourself?, even if you ended up buying/hiring an engine crane it would still be
cheaper & you could sell it afterwards?.

As long as you label everything up, wires pipes etc.. you cant go to far wrong.
Or…… start it yourself, get stuck, stick a post up on here, whatever the issue
someone has already had it & solved it before, or get someone round to help out?.

Its got to be better than paying a garage ££££££££?,  last resort if you do go to
a garage, get a "FIXED PRICE" for removal etc.. not an hourly rate.

Best of luck whatever you decide mate.

its not really the engine its all the ancillaries, if you want to do it properly youve got to consider the wiring loom, taking it right back through to the fusebox to remove all the grommets,
heater  matrix, rad, lights ,brake mechanism and all the brake lines, fuel lines, wipers and mech, all the plastic clips etc etc.

then its a very thorough clean up, repaires if needed prep up for paint remebering theres alot of tricky places to get to, then paint.

then obviously its the reverse of the above bearing in mind it takes alot longer to put it back in because theres no point putting dirty components back in so these need cleaning or sourcing replacing, and theres likely to be many of the clips broken that will need replacing.

if your thinking of getting someone else to this your better of setting a budget and asking what you would get for it!!
and if you can, keep it all inhouse i.e get the engine etc removal done at the same place as the paint work, it will save complications later.

When restoring mine I just used cans for the bay as I was adding bits and bobs for the conversion, came out grand as I have never done any painting before! If using an air comp you want one with a suitably large tank and ideally capable of flowing in excess of 14cfm. Added some basic info on how I have been doing mine if it helps (needs updating badly though!) http://mk1golf-16vt.webeden.co.uk/#/restoration/4543983928

It's not just engine and ancilliaries though if you're doing it properly, pretty much everything needs to be removed, battery, radiator, steering components, shafts (I cut out rain tray also to free up some room) etc etc

Here is how it came out before I removed everything else, nothing wrong with cans for the bay!

Note above how steering covers/rack etc may need removing, I also had to remove everything like the servo/cyl (note the rubber bits are still on in pic, these are a PITA to fully get off!). Looks nicer than the Mars Red it was in IMHO.

I would get one. it's easy to do it yourself at home and you can plate what you want and not run the risk of losing part in the process!
