Does anyone have a old orginal vin plate??

My front vin plate is missing from my car after some old accident damage. ive rang vw and they say they are no longer available from them.

ive therefore contacted a company that can make me a replica vin plate, but to do this they need an original to copy. i dont want anyone to take theirs off but if someone had a old one laying about that i could borrow to copy i would appreciate it.

if all goes well il speak to dano about opening up a replacement service for club members if successful and a process about how they would be issued.

I have mine removed from my car at the moment ( new front panel being put on!) so I can lend you mine however it is an 83 gti if this makes a difference. I need a replacemnt as mine is very faint so would be up for a group buy of some sort.....?

My s1 vin plate is off my car at the mo. I can send pics lined up next to a ruler if you like?  I'd rather not send it out as for some reason I'm having things go missing in the post when they are being sent to me I really don't want to lose this!

From what I've seen they are all the same. The company I've contacted said he can get it 98% accurate but it mite be just differ slightly from the orignal, I.e one of the text boxes. That's why i need one to copy for the fonts etc and do some more research on how to get them then stamped correctly. Thanx for the offers but have one now enroute and il keep you updated.

Copying VIN plates is probably a controlled process with the manufacturers and the police otherwise it can clearly be used for ringing cars.

S1 and S2 plates are different and S2s have the barcode on the inside of the front panel that replaced the production plate on S1s.

Most S1 1979 cars were not fitted with VIN plates.

they dont supply them anymore and are obsolete. im trying to sort it that the club becomes the controlled process

Last time I checked they supply a sticker instead. Not sure the club can determine legitimate requests from ringers as it would involve inspecting cars, etc that the police/DVLA do.

A quick google search and you can buy all types of blank plates and punch kits! Relax we are not going to aid any car ringers here.

I spoke to VW, they will tell you it's impossible to get a new vin, it's not, you have to fill out a form and then have it authorised by the police to prevent ringing. If you want the form tell the parts guy to look on the system or I can send it to anyone that needs it. I spoke to VW uk headquarters to find this out. It costs £50+VAT from the stealers though and as said before its just a sticker, good waste of money IMO.

I spoke to a guy who works for the police who deals with replacement vin plates for all sorts of old cars, he told me its mainly fords which have the vin stamped in the floor plan!

Anyway he told me that as far as an MOT goes as long as you have a plate affixed to your car permanently i.e. rivets, stamped etc. then you can have whatever you like. As long as it displays the vin number and makes it obvious that it's a vin number then it's fine.

With that in mind, I had this made:


Cost me £30, there's a few options for design too, you could have a black face with silver letters if you wanted. Anyway, if anyone is interested I could sort something out for you if you PM me. I've had mine on for an MOT and the tester didn't even ask.
