Diesel Engined Mk1s?
hi guys, i curently have my eye on a diesel mk1, but every time i stick its particulars in a insurance thingy, it comes up wrong :?
the car is advertised as a 1.6 diesel, apparently the same engine as fitted to the caddy, did these ever come as standard in a mk1 tin top?

In this country the Golf was only ever offered in basic spec. The original 1500 1979/80 would have been Golf LD and then later 1600 Golf C Diesel. Both 5 door version don't think 3 door Diesels offered.
Many were imported by service personnel and were different specs, 3-drs, autos and GLs which won't be listed.
I think some insurance companies also have a 20 year cut off so all Mk1s won't be listed. :dontknow:
Also from memory when I had a 1980 Jetta LD the insurance group is very high for such a low powered vehicle……

Not standard, by A reg all were 5pd as standard so g/b changed atleast.
If its converted/modified petrol the insurance company will add another 0 to the quote.

thats the one mate
what difference would it make what it said on the logbook mate? suppose if its still down as a 1.5 or whatever it'd be fine….
could it not have just had the 5 speed box swapped out?

Seen it on ebay twice, looks ok, hope there's no nasty suprises though. Not sure about the addiction to easy-start :? It certainly looks like an original diesel and not an ex petrol model judging by the interior/exterior clues. It comes up on the DVLA vehicle enquiry as a 1600 diesel when you put in the reg number. Mines a 1.6 5 speed on an '82 X. Previous car was 5 speed on an '83 Y. Golf C diesels are insurance group 8! Mine has always come straight up on insurance systems (major insurers at least). To insure even before your 25 and before the car's 25 (for classic insurance) it's pretty cheap (where I am at least). It's just a shame the tax is still top wack  . It certainly rewards me in every other way with 65mpg and suprising performance and reliability in all areas, and maintenance parts are usually all off the shelf and cheap as chips (same parts as Seat Ibiza etc.)
Not gone down the veg oil route yet, but nice to know I can if diesel shoots up in price!
All the best with the car, let us know how it goes.

well, just letting you know how it went with this car… unfortunatley, it didnt!
i have called the guy about twenty times between 8 last night and now, and he hasnt answered the phone at all, needless to say i'm rather disappointed, and to be truthful, a bit upset.
This is my first time buying a VW, let alone a mk1, but i've wanted one for as long as i can remember, and now i have a bit of cash burning a hole in my pocket, every single one seems to be hundreds of miles away, or shit like this happens!
