Clutch cable length

I'm moving my clutch cable to run underneith the gearbox ("show" not "go")

Weird thing is that my clutch cable (at 1470mm long) is the longest one that VW list for a mk1… yet my cable wont reach under the gearbox even though I've seen it done before one another mk1 (and that person said he used a standard clutch cable).
