My mechanic says if i drop it 40mm the wheels will just rub on the arches and inner linings

What do you think?

Its on 195/50/15 tyres, not sure of the whell size tbh

Really can't tell from pics alone (unless they were detailed close up ones of the wheel well and tyre, etc). So I'd go with your mechanic - if he says lowering another 40mm will cause rubbing, then he's probably right. Its difficult to tell anyway, since rubbing would occur when the suspension is articulated (including the steering turning), which is difficult to check when the car is standing. The way you'd tell is by looking at the tyres, if there was any doubt. Or by keeping some kind of margin for clearance, ie not lowering it too much.

Can the arches be folded on golfs?

If so you could fold the rear and maybe purchase wider arch front wings if available.
IMO alot of hassle over 40mm but a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do

Mine is currently on it's backside running 7.5x15's going to raise it though as I don't want to notch the inner wings to clear the drive shafts, try to keep the shafts and lower arms parallel with the floor as not to put undue stress on the running gear and cv joints. Trial and error really hence why some prefer coil overs so they can adjust to suit.

lower it is the only real way to tell

mines down about 80mm now on BBS RA's

What size is your ET

The RA's have an ET of (iirc) ET 37, so my fronts are now runnig 195/45/15 and with camber set up correctly i was getting a little rub when cornering so have rolled the arches a tad - my old clipper had a 40mm drop and never rubbed and that had 195/50/15 wheels with an ET of 33..

ET45 but i know ive had to put 5mm spacers on to clear the brakes. Simply by looking at the distance between the tyres and the edge of the arches looks like they'll just sit on them.

The problem with lowering it, then raising it if it rubs, is that the MoT tester will look at the tyres and if he sees witness marks, might assume it still rubs and fail you on the MoT, even if it no serious tyre damage was done and the suspension raised again.

If you would like to tinker with what will work and what won't. This detailed wheel - tyre - offset comparison chart will give you all the info you need.

My tintop is quite heavily lowered on G60's (et 35) and with 12mm spacers on the back, had no problems with tyre scrubbing but I've got a little bit of stretch going on. Im sure if your prepared to do it, buying some narrower tyres would allow you to bring it down.
