Cabby vs tintop

Please can we not turn this thread into "convertibles aren't real mk1's" …………….. We all know they are ;)

It's just I was thinking about changing my clipper for an early tin top, it won't be a gti just a small engine driver. I just wondered if these cars are as fun as the convertibles ? It's just in the summer I loved havingthe roof down and I like having the bigger 1.8 engine but I want something older (mines a 91) and cus I'm 22 I can't afford insurance on 2 mk1's. And I'm worried that a 1.1 or 1.3 driver will be like driving any other car with a roof  :dontknow:

Especially with this trip to Germany that dave (ginner) is organising I wanna make sure I bring the right car

Just wanna get some thoughts and opinions as I think I'm doing my girlfriends head in going on about it all the time :)

Normally I would say tintop, but if your having to go down in engine to a 1.3 or 1.1 just to satisfy the insurance on a tintop, then stay with what you got.

What have the insurance quoted for larger engined tin tops? and how do they compare to the price your paying for your cabby?

A 1.3 tin top is around the same as the cabby in my tesco policy. Didn't bother trying a bigger engine after that tbh I will tonight

I've got a 1.1 corsa to insure to so i wanna drive that daily and have a golf as second car. So I assumed a little driver would've been cheaper. But insurance is crazy :(

Yep insurance is crazy  :(

Get some trial quotes for a 1.8 GTi, use my registration of my GTi as the proposed car and see what comes back, details below

Registration: ELJ 863Y
Engine cc: 1781
3 door in Black
Milage: 1780,000
Put the value at whatever you feel

I have owned both in summer it has to be ragtop but for all weather
driving got to be tintop and they give me a bigger grin.
But If you have 1100/1300 engine stick with clipper

try insurance with lancaster. i'm 24 and got my tin top insurance for £180 with all mods declared. thats for a limited milage of 3000.

Also herts insurance sorted my out with my caddy insurance. they were half what other companies were asking.

Yea I started to think that I was Daz1971 !!

Hope the Breccy meet is a good one tomorrow, we would of come but we are away this weekend :-(

I drove my Tin Top for the first time in a month yesterday, it was very manly and I had forgotten how scary a 16VG60 feels at 7000 rpm !! Had her drifting sideways on a roundabout !! The Lysholm charger has arrived :-) Christmas is going to be fun !!

I had a cabby as my first car and then bought a tintop 6 months after i passed my test. i sold the cabby and am 1.8T'ing the tintop.

Tintop was much more fun to drive even though it was a 1.1 and would be screaming down the A500 at 50mph and sounded like a hairdryer lol

I saw a crinkly peanut tomorrow

My friend crashed his tintop into A lamp post side on and it was decimated and he came off with a fractured skullsnd broken ribs.

I'd rather be in a cabby 4 sure, all that strength just might save ur life even if it is heavy to lug around

Also they seem better build quality from karmann

An all this about cabriolets are 4 girls just shows how insecure u really are!

Of course you have to remember that all cabbys started off as tin tops before they were sent off for the Karmann operation to be turned into more feminine vehicle. It must of been very painful for them to have the roof chopped off and fitted with a floppy top :-)

I would advise all potential mk1 owners to get a soft top, leave the real mk 1s to me

Do we appear to be compensating for a lack in other areas?
