1600 MK1 Golf GTI Rallying History
Whilst VW Motorsport homologated some really trick bits including a 16v 1600 and water cooled brake calipers I have to prove that these parts were used in rallies before I can use them in my car build.
I would really welcome any help by way of copy articals, magazines, books or any other contempory information, happy to buy.
Also if anyone has any period competition parts I would be interested in buying such items.
I think a 5 speed 1600 will be very quick with great potential to give the Fords a whooping!!!!

Out of curiosity how much are you looking at spending on your VW, and how much does an equivalent Ford car cost to build?

1600 Golf GTI Rally Car
Regarding a budget, things like the 16v head would be nice but not essential.
The car is quite lively in its present state and one of the grat things about the Golf is that it weights considerably less than say an Escort. It needs a diff, VW Motorsport part avalaible for £400ish with suitable crownwheel and pinion. It is already running carbs and decent manifolds. Dont know what cam is in there but will leave it alone for the time being, ditto the head. Better welded in cage rather than the bolt in thats in there-£1200 to take it through to the front turrets if I can prove that type of cage was used in competition in period, even better to prove the type that go down to the front chassis legs.
Suspension is coilovers which will be replace with secondhand Bilstiens, new bushes, lower arms and springs, say £1000 budget as the bilstiens are scourced.
Brakes are ok-discs all round so leave alone for the time being.
The base car is fully guarded and runs standard tank.
I dont like the seats, belts and extinguishers which are all in date. I will replace with some better parts that I already have from another car.
Some lightening to do, fiberglass tailgate and polycarbon windows- £250. I will run 13" wheels-readily avlaible on e-bay, say £70/set or less. Yokohama tyres £45 each from George Polley Motorsport and I have some already.
The base car was £2500 so budget to change to my spec rather than the existing rally car is say £5500.
What I will probably do is run it for the time being and then strip, dip and paint it this winter.
I sold MK2 RS2000 which was very nice but not competative for £12500, so the Golf option is quite attractive in my opinion.
As for the trick bits, I doubt any of it is still being made so e-bay and various forums will hopefully yield parts from time to time.
In the meantime I will try to take weight out and keep it reliable.
At the moment I am running a 1965 swb 2.0s 911 and I just cant bear the thought of a big off and the repair bill, finding another shell would be a nightmare and into 5 figures for anything decent.
All help, guidance and advice greatfully recevied.
Thanks so far,
Mike

They will go up in the gallery section. we're doing one thing at a time rather than crashing round trying to do loads of things that never get finished properly.
The end result will hopefully be ok.

Sounds like you've got yourself quite a cheap alternative with the Mk1 then!
German ebay is a very good place for rare tuning parts like the 16v heads, although you can get pretty decent power from an 8v head if it's ported. ClubGTI would be a good starting point for info on that, and 2nd hand racing parts too.

Theres a guy i know who rallies a mk1 Golf a similar way,he has to keep loads of originality on it to keep it in that class,it used to have loads of fancy bits on it but hes had to remove them all to do it this way, back to orig front brakes etc!!!not good! When i last spoke to him a few wks ago he was having TSR build him a trick 1600 motor for it!I sold him a set of 13" BBS wheels for it too because he said they had to run this size too.He uses all fibre glass panels on too,bit odd they are allowed to use them i thought!
Have you got any photos of your mates mk1 rally car?

I saw this thread and decided to join the gig, so to speak.
I also have a MK1 Tarmac Spec Rally car. I spend years building it, as it was my first car I ever owned and after it came to the end of it's normal life I could not bear to sell it, so decided to convert it. The car is a 1981 1.5 GLS but don't let that full you. The car is good. The list of mods and spec is long and would take a while to list. I have only ever done 4 Rallies in it but have also sprinted it and done GTI days at Kaims. If you have seen it you will remember it -yellow and fast.
If you want a quick resume here it is: Weight 850kg. All perspex windows except windscreen, glassfiber bonnet. Half welded gage with through turret extensions front and also attached to rears. Leda coil overs. Disks all round, Willwood front 4 pots. 14" steel wheels, lots. Michealin comp tyres. 1595cc short motor, 8 valve GTI ported head with oversised exhaust valves, Cosworth cam followers (buckets) Cam, pair of webber 40s. VW motorsport 6 speed syncro box. Fully rose jointed short shift gear mech. etc. etc
This all cost alot of money and time to develop. The car still looks fairly 'simple' but is a blast to drive. If you want to ask any questions about it, to help with your development please fire away.
Sadly it has sat in the gaurage for 5 years now without turning a wheel, so it is still like new. Family, work, and general life has put a stop to my ambitions. So I am not sure what to do with it now? Sell or Keep as a classic? Or convert to a Post Historic?
