:? if that's the case I retract my previous statement and GVV 250T would be the one to hunt down

Dubboy's probs got the definative answer, but AFAIK the original colours were mars red, black, and diamond silver metallic.
Are you genuinely seeking a series 1 for restoration?

GVV is the earliest RHD UK car I have heard of, but again its the chassis number that proves this.
GTi colours are posted in the link below, though one error - Mars Red was available for '76 Model Year.

Part of the 'marketing' surrounding the GTI at the time was the choice of only 3 colours - black, silver and red - to tie in with the generally range-topping, sporty theme. For VW, the GTI was as much about promoting the rest of the Golf range as creating a great car.

Rajan, do you have any list of year/available colours that could maybe be put in a FAQ of some sort regarding series 1/series 2 differences, available specs/colours throughout the years etc
comes up quiet alot and I can never remember what's what, and tend not to look very far to find the info ops:

I have these lists:
All GTi colours by year
All Series 1 colours by year
All Series 1 models by year
All Series 1 engines by year
With regard to specs and differences between Series 1 and 2, it is not straightforward. What year Series 1 to compare with what year Series 2? One really needs a list of changes year by year. I have started some work on this already (I am up to MY '81), at least for the GTi (but some common with non-GTi) but its quite a big job so slow progress ops:

I know someone with a silver gti registered on the first day they were made available in the uk, with 1 owner from new and full service history. I will not disclose his name though as he is quite private about it. Quite a find though.
Can you find out the first registered date and VIN? I imagine that VW had the first UK cars and registered them for launch and Type Approval purposes before they went on sale to the public.
