Best way to work insurance?

Heyhey guys,

I've been deep in tought for the past couple of days (dangerous i know.) Anyway, I'm 20 with a 1.8 GTi mk1 cabby, which is currently costing me £870 to insure.

However, we are coming up to winter, and I want to get another, very cheap banger to use to and from work daily (if you know of any let me know ;) )

Anyway, Im trying to work out the best way to do my insurance. Would it be worth me putting another car on my current policy, Or should I have a look at classic insurance for the golf and put the new banger on my main policy?

does anyone have any experience with classic insurance for young drivers, or opinions on what may be the best idea? I know I will have to ring around for a definate price, but If anyone can point me in the right direction, or reccomend a way to do this, it would be appreciated. :)

thanks
steve

Having 2 seperate policies will be quite expensive cus you can only use your no claims once ie if you have 2 years NCB you could put 2 years NC on the banger, none on the golf, or 1 on each etc etc. and turning a policy into multicar is a pain in the ass i tried that was on the phone for an hour what they want to do is wait for policy to run out then upgrade for a year, but maybe that was just my insurance company, the easiest option would be (if you have a garage) SORN the golf and transfer your current policy onto a new car, might cost £15 odd in "admin fee's"

im 23 and couldnt find classic insurance for under £900 and normal insurance is £500!!!

Hi Steve,

£870 doesn't seem too bad considering some of the horror stories I've read on here.

Regarding your problem I think if you aren't gong to use the Golf over the winter transfer the policy over as someone else said and declare it SORN mate. Depending on how much tax you have got you could send that off for a refund??

Yea as said above, best bet is to take it off the road and swap insurance over!

i have 3 seperate policies with only my NCD on my main daily driver.
As my Mk1 and my Mini are considered classics i have classic insurance for them and i dont need NCD's for them.

I dont class them as daily drivers and am restricted to a few thousand miles a year on them.

Only reason I didnt want to declare it SORN was because I wanted to keep it running very occasionally, i can just imagine leaving it completely over winter and having issues when I come to start it again in the summer :/

I would only be stored on the drive under a cover, As the garage is full of MotorBikes (cars should take priority, but my dad disagrees) ;)

B-G-B, did it work out cheaper for you to do it that way?

Steve,

There are companies out there that will insure you by the day? Might be worth researching than paying for something you will only need once or twice over the winter for a matter of hours??

Stevie.  My mini costs me £98 a year,  the Golf £160 a year  both limited to 3000 miles and for pleasure only.

My passat Daily driver is for business and covers 25k a year and it costs me £400.

one thing to watch is the new rules about cars not on SORN and not insured.  Im sure if its taxed and not insured you can get fined.

My mini is garaged every October for 6 months and every weekend i go out and turn the car over and leave it running for 5 mins.  every now and then it gets reversed out of the garage into the drive and back again.  in 6 months your lucky if it covers 200 yards but its running and moving.

Hmm, thats a good idea actually, didnt even consider that option :)

also, on a complete side note, do you have any experince of them pop up garages you can buy? Ive been looking and that seems like it could be a good option as I could easily work on the car :)

Yeah, I did read up ont hem rules B-G-B, the missus' brother got caught out on them with his mini a while back, So dont want to fall into the same trap :)

Cheers :)

Cheap gazebo from argos does the same thing.  and £18 isnt that much to loose when it flies over next door in a wind.

The joy of the garages is that they seem to be sturdier. I have various things I could tie / Weigh it down with, so that isnt an issue. I'm just in two minds :P

considering the WIND we have had recently the sturdier ones means more damage to next doors car.

Thats fine, its only a citroen anyway ;)

But the wind wouldnt be a major issue for me, I have a place just off the drive I can put it, where it is sheltered by trees and could fasten it securely and fix it to the ground :)
