Sealing your BBS RM/RS wheels

Would stick up a quick how to seeing as this is something that has a million answers on how to be done and gets a bit confusing. The method i've used is probably not the best way but it's worked for me!

You will need;

Thinners
240/320 grit sandpaper
Wire wool
Some old rags
12 point 8mm socket
Torque wrench
Small flathead screwdriver
Grinder with soft brush attachment (optional but makes life a lot easier!)
Sealant (I used Evostik multi-purpose sealant)
Craft knife


Starting with the rim, sand the mounting face with the sandpaper to ensure no paint is on there, wipe the surface with thinners making sure not too touch the spokes!
Once that is done, use the screwdriver to make sure the small indentation running across the inside of the mounting face is clean and free of any paint or corrosion.



Once done you should have something like this



Moving onto the lips. These will have remnants of sealant and other bits stuck on them. You can either use thinners and wire wool/ sandpaper to get it all off, or use your grinder to take everything off, then give it a once over with the thinners and wire wool to give a nice clean surface for the sealant to stick to.




Then run a bead of sealant around 6mm or so thick around the inner edge of the mounting face on the rim.



Place the lip on the wheel, tighten bolts slightly then torque them to spec (12-15 lb/ft for RMs, 22-25ft/lb for RS'). Sealant coming out the bolt holes is a good sign,  means it's gone all the way in


Flip the wheel over and with the silicone fill up the mating area.


And smooth with a wet finger.



Let the silicone set overnight and remove any excess with a craft knife 

A little tip i've just realised when rebuilding these again.

In picture 4 you can see i've placed a bead of sealant on the inside of the bolt holes. This time I placed it outside the bolt holes and then turned the lip around a bit to ensure an even smear of sealant all round. This makes it A LOT easier to clean up as all the sealant wont come up around the edges of the lip and the barrel.
