Ok so you've made that mistake and left you lights on. Gone back to your car and dead!!! Easy mistake to make and I have suffered first hand, calling AA man to help us out. Annoying more than anything else and people are not so neighbourly nowadays they don't tell you the car lights are on. Some do but nice neighbours are hard to come by haha.
First off your going to need a genuine vw audi and seat relay number 292 from a late caddy or similar part number 1L0951307 or 443951307B from an audi 80 90 100.
You need to locate position number 7 on your fuse box which is the bottom left side and fit the 292 relay.
Now whenever you turn your engine off and your lights are on you will get an audible nee naa nee naa like an old police panda car until you switch the lights off.
You deserve a cuppa n bickie with your feet up after this one

I have owned mk1's for years and only just worked this one out……… I was looking at the relays and wiring diagram and it just clicked. Seems so obvious now but like anything in life didn't see the wood for the trees.
Just sharing with my fellow mk1 members so you can all benefit

Just got one from ebay too.
There will be head scratching going on in the VW spares industy as to why sales of 292 relays have suddenly gone through the roof

Hi is this possible on the earlier S1 fuse box with ceramic fuses?

Unfortunately no it's not going to happen. You will need the wiring and the relay holder.BrainsOnFire78 said

Pic courtesy of LeS2Audi
You have to splice it into your wiring loom best place for it is behind headlight switch or next to the fuse box but you will need to work out the wiring to attach to.

I bought one of these relays only to find there is already a relay "15" in that particular slot? Does anyone know what this would be for?
Sorry I am rubbish when it comes to anything electrical!

It's a multipurpose relay horn/fog light etc
No Idea what its doing it location 7
Only thing I can suggest is turn everything on in your car take the relay out and check if anything goes off or if everything works its in the wrong place

Thanks for the tip.
I fitted this relay last night along with the wiper delay relay (99) and it was great to be able to make two worthwhile improvements in as many minutes
I do wonder at the fusebox being wired already for this yet is seems they didn't actually fit them as standard, what were VW thinking?
