Tired and crusty hub caps
Degreaser
Metal polish (I used autosol but others are available)
Rags lots of, Or a bed sheet either works.
Step 1:
Remove the old hub caps and realise they need a good old clean and polish, mine were a little sad looking.
Step 2:
Degrease and remove all dirt and grit from the hub caps, this is incredibly boring so find somewhere with a good view
In order to do this you will need lots of rags, however I wanted a superior finish and extra shine so used a slightly better material, this is where you need to be brave. Go into the linen cupboard and get yourself a nice big old bed sheet, make sure it is 100% cotton, Egyptian is good but more important is the thread count this needs to be at least 200 so as to give the softest finish and will avoid scratching your precious caps. Do not fear about getting this dirty and not having clean sheets to sleep in tonight as once the mrs sees the irrepairable damage to her best linen you will find yourself sleeping on the sofa in a sleeping bag.
Step 3:
Start on the inside of the caps to give yourself some practice and check that the polish you are using will not have any dodgy effects on the chromework. Rub into the metal using circular motions and allow to dry for a few seconds, buff up to a high shine using a fresh part of the bedsheet. below shows the difference left hand side being polished right left as was
Step 4:
Repeat step 3 but all over, spending extra time on all the tarnished bits, On the outer face you may want to put several coats on to help remove scratches and get a good finish just remember to change the cloth regularly to give best results and reduce the chance of rubbing dirt or grit into the metal leaving unsightly scoring.
et voila you now have shiny hub caps

Those of you with keen eyes will have probably spotted my bedsheet was already showing some signs of wear and tear, no this was not because of a Guinness based evening but because of already using it to degrease the underside of my bonnet…
Nice little write up Jules. Not sure I believe you too either.
