Hi guys, had an old Xbox 360 power supply lying around, so decided to use it for something useful :)
The one i'm using is the 200W version, capable of supplying 16.7A @ 12VDC.
So, you'll need
- Soldering gear (Your favourite iron and flux/lead combination) For this i'm using my stupid iron as i could find my ickle wickle ones :lol:
- Strippers (Ones that cut wires not the sexy kind)
- An Xbox 360 PSU
- Heat shrink /electrical tape
- Voltmeter
- Sharp knife
- Your choice of connector
Let's get started then :)
First off cut the wire at the desired length. Cutting the thick outer grey wire will reveal some braided wiring surrounding the black covered core wires underneath it. So you want to cut as much of the bare wire away then GENTLY open the black core insulation up, taking care not to cut yourself or the dog/cat/hamster.
You should end up with this
Depending on your PSU you may only have 3 yellow and 3 black.
Yellow = positive
Black = negative
Blue = Jumper wire
Red= 5V supply
Now with a 360, power supply isnt always on (obviously) and you press the button on the console to boot up the console and "starts" the psu. Obviously this is no good for us, so go ahead and strip some insulation and twist the red and blue wires together, this will give us a supply that is always on.
Strip and twist all the yellow and black wires together, you should end up with this
Next it's time to bust out the soldering gear. Solder and insulate the red/blue twisted wires and push them out of the way for now. Tin your yellow and black wires, and do the same for the wires on your connector. Wire the red to the yellow and black to the black, insulate it all and voila!
You should now get a solid green light and a smidge over 12V on your voltmeter.
Once your happy, you can leave it as is or do as i did and wrap it up in electrical tape. Plug your charger in and there you have it :)
