You need, basic tools, something to pump out fuel (or nearly empty tank) you will need a new fuel ring cover bit urm and maybe some jubilee clips and a rubber seal for filler neck if you can find one! really helps id you can get under the car too.
garage wernt 100% but then after some research i noticed the filler neck was a bit rusty. which is a common fault, rust gets into the tank and blocks everything up. you can get replacements for about £140. the more common mk1 filler neck is about £45 but i read fits it just need some cutting down.
that was a bit of an understate meant, it needed a lot chopped of, and didnt really line up quite rite but me and dad made it fit! this is what came off mine using a pipe cutter doing a bit at a time, proplem is you lose the bend at the end. this is how much of the new pipe we ended off cutting!
rite, first you need to empty your tank of most of the petrol, i started with a tube down the filler neck, this didnt work as there is a bar accross the tank to stop anything getting in, so i lifted the rear seats (2 screws on lip of footwell) and then opened the 3 srews to get to the lift pump out. the haynes guide was useless, this one in pic needed to be twisted then lifted and was very stiff (had to make a tool to put it back as i had broken a a lip of plastic on it, laying a screwdriver flat and twisting worked, undo the plug and 2 fuel lines and it then pulls out after that. then pumped out fue, be safe people!l. now remove your rear drivers side wheel.
then at the fuel cap, had to remove the black plastic sticker (will need a new one) revealing 3 screws there, a 10mm nut inside the wheel arch, and then a clip in a breather pipe at the very top. mine broke off as rust was that bad. then the pipe joins the tank with a rubber pipe, i just undid the clip closest to the filler and left it on the tank, may be easier to take rite off but clips were a nightmare.
new and old pipe
then it took some fudging to get it in the rubber tube to tank, i used 3 new screws and new clips everywhere, the 10mm nut/screw was about 20mm sticking out as the pipe doesnt twist quite the same, to checked it wouldnt hit the wheel and used a 20mm rubber spacer, and a longer screw to hole the pipe in place.
a bit brief i know any questions give me a PM. tbh it was a chor! but saved about £100.
