1980 1.6gti kjet
Eg engine 1.6 kjet gti will not run properly or start.
Replaced tank, filler neck, fuel pump, coil, cap, arm, leads, plugs and relay.
It starts sort of so I have spark and I have fuel. But runs lumpy and rough for about a minute or two. Will restart about 2 or 3 times then not at all. Leave for a bit as I think it's flooding and will fire but not run. At this point the engine is mildly warm to the touch but not warmed up to temperature.
I am trying to work out what it could be. It's not been driven more than about 20 miles in 2 years due to me working on it on and off to get it running.
It used to run quite nice when I changed the tank a year ago but had issues with the brake upgrade to a 9inch servo and read brake conversion. Fixed that and now won't run.
All I can think is WUR or actual distributor but it's just sucking up money and not getting anywhere so would love some guidance before I waste more money on it.
Thanks.

Update.
Poured some petrol into the hard tube that connects air box to inlet manifold. Started a treat.
Ran lovely and warmed up and ticked over well. No misfires or lumpy idle.
Now going to let it cool down before trying again and if all good can button it up and sell it.
If not then decide what is causing the poor cold start issue.

So tried it after about 2 hours and was a bit
Lumpy for a minute but smoothed out as it warmed up.
Just tried it again and nothing. So assume it's the 5th injector and/or the WUR.
Any ideas on which it might be. Or if indeed it's both. 5th injector looks like it's sealed with a cornflake box home made gasket which would have been in place for at least 7 years some days have had it.
Advice welcome on what to play with next. At least I know a dash of fuel in the air intake pipe will get me running now.

Hi
Sounds like not starting on the initial fuel from 5th injector.
Normally it's turn the key and immedately starts.
That's the 5th injector spraying fuel in the inlet manifold, same as your method pouring fuel in air intake.
A few tests to check the 5th injector.
- unplug the blue plug on it, and connect an multimeter and you should get 12V whilst cranking for a few seconds.
- disconnect the 5th injector, 2 allen keys, and place in a jar and should get a spray of fuel whilst cranking for a few seconds.
(the number of seconds depends on the temp of the engine)
If no fuel and no multimeter voltage could be wiring or could be the Thermo Time Switch.
When you crank the car the TTS creates an earth for the 5th injector, for a number of seconds depending on heat of the engine, it has a heater element inside and heats itself to break the 5th injector ground circuit, stopping the 5th injector injecting fuel.

Thank you. Give me something to do today. Hopefully it's something easy to fix. Hate wiring. 👍

It might not be a bad idea to have K Jet system pressure and control pressure checked with pressure gauges, this will give you an indication of how well your fuel metering head and WUR are operating, I just helped a mate solve a Hot start issue and have a pressure gauge, happy to help, based Birmingham B42.
As been mentioned already best to check 5th injector operation.
