Mk3 engine and gearbox
Initially it went like a dream, actually keeping up with the traffic !
Now the drive shaft on the passenger side is making a bad knocking noise and the cv joint fell apart. The local gearbox guy who had a look to identify the noise said the angle from gearbox to wheel was 'quite acute'?
I know many others have done this conversion. Can anyone advise me whether to get a new Mk1 drive shaft or a Mk3? Everything else on the Caddy apart from engine and gearbox is Mk1.
Thanks.

The typical older mk1 had 90mm axles where as the 87-93 Cabriolets had 100mm. axles.
The 90mm axles when transmissions were swapped would fit into the 100 spindles on latter cabbies, where as the 100mm axles wouldn't fit into a 90mm spindle with out Grindage.
So the axle sizes have a lot of determing things, as I suspect that the AAZ axles ae either older stock or newer stock with older styles of CV's attached.
I thing some more investigation is warranted as to which axle you are currently trying to replace.
A mk3, or a 100mm Cabriolet, or a early 90mm Golf?
What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

The AAZ was from P reg 1998 Golf TD estate.
I don't think they changed drive shafts ( wasn't detailed on the invoice). As I said, nothing else was changed so I assume they just put my Mk1 shafts into the Mk3 gearbox?
I just wondered, as I had read somewhere that cv joints and shafts are known to wear after these conversions - whether I ought to get another Mk1 shaft or if it would be better to get Mk3? But whether that would then fit at the wheel…?
