Where can I buy a brake caliper seal kit?

Post

Hi there,

I've been rebuilding the brakes on my mk1 scirocco and the caliper seals need replacing.

Any idea where I can order some?

According to the old haynes manual, they are described as 'teves' caliper.

Here is a photo of them.

Any info on a part number or where to buy much appreciated.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

I see you have an early Scirocco, so you haven't got the usual VW II calipers fitted to more recent cars for which seal kits are readily available from the likes of Heritage.

For ATE calipers, I think the part you need is 827698471. A few ebay sellers claim to stock aftermarket versions, as does Autodoc, and there are a few genuine VW NOS still available here:

Thanks for the links guys.

I didn't know the calipers were ate that is handy to know for the future and the seal kits in your link do look like the right ones.

That's a big help, thanks.

Getting pretty rare these cars!

Looks in very nice condition. Don't see many earlier than 1980 at Scirocco meets these days

VW Classic parts is always worth a look for discontinued genuine parts and genuine VW reproductions, They also sell aftermarket parts at list price, so check the quality category before buying as their aftermarket prices are steep compared with other online sellers.

Other than that I have used NK Automotive in Greece several times for discontinued VW genuine parts

Apparently ATE is the brand name of Teves, which is now part of Continental

I think 'Ate' was a corruption of the company founders name Alfred Teves.

Oddly Ate doesn't seem to list your Type 53 Scirocco, so took a chance the 1.5 JB Golf 1 might have the same or at least a similar set up.

August 1978 seems to be a change over point for certain components, awkward for you with a car of that year and potential to get the wrong part in error.

https://web.tecalliance.net/ate/en/parts/cars/assigned?assemblyGroupId=100027&targetId=1619&typeNumber=1619#@brc/brands:Car;targetType:cars/models:;targetType:cars;manufacturerId:121;filterMode:preferred/assem:VW%2520GOLF%2520I%2520(17)%25201.5;targetType:cars;targetId:1619;typeNumber:1619/lnkparts:Brake%2520Caliper;targetType:cars;assemblyGroupId:100027;targetId:1619;typeNumber:1619

So just to reinforce things - I'm not familiar with your car, so please make sure any of the below is correct to your car / it's age, for yourself.

If they do cross over, then it looks like Ate no longer make the complete seal kit themselves.

Their part number is / was 11.0441-4402.2 (compatible with VW861 698 471 / 823 698 471 / 827 698 471)

It's possible however the alternative makers listed below still supply the kit, or old stock can at least be found on the likes of eBay...
