Whats going on with my timing light?

Post

I have a strange one, or maybe I'm being stupid….. Quite possibly the latter.

Trying to time up my 1.1 FA code engine, with elec ignition and my timing light wont work properly, its kind of intermittent/not working at all when on lead 1… Works on lead 2???

The car starts runs and drives (albeit a b it rough)…. So would my leads be incorrectly configured? I doubt it'd start if they were wrong? I've got it 1-3-4-2 counter clockwise? and rotor arm is looking at me at TDC?

The timing light works just fine on my mk2 so I've ruled that out, I'm questioning my firing order??

If it is running a bit rough it sounds like number 1 is not getting a firing pulse and spark every time. Could be a lead that is breaking down or not fitted correctly. Might be a cracked dizzy cap or bad cap or rotor arm.

Cheers,
Ade

It is strange, cap, arm and leads are new.

That's not to say the leads ain't duff tho. I will switch out number 1 with a different lead. See if that helps.

The current plugs are the ones with a bonded end, not the type you unscrew.

I may switch the leads and plugs out to that type, I trust them so much more for some reason, its the reasurring noise they make when you plug them on.

Any decent sites that actually list plugs and leads with their connection type?

AVS sell these.

Mahneti Marelli MSK1155 Lead Set - OE Ref: 431998031A | AVS Car Parts

They don't show detailed pictures of the termination type tho?

I want the m4 pin type for the plugs…. and I assume standard din fitting for the cap and the coil…. as I ain't l changing everything. :)

Edit

Sticking in the beru part number into eBay brings up this, thems look like what I need.

the oem fit leads should fit directly on the end of the thread on the plug, as do bosch and beru made ones.

for the cap and coil it depends on the age of the car, early have plain hole and #'butterfly' lead ends, later cars have pins in the holes and wee clips on the leads that clip over them

depending on what dizzy you have you can sometimes convert to late type by carefully choosing the right cap and arm combo, but theres no real need

My cap and coil just have a plain hole. I have a set of plugs with just the threaded end to shove in.

I was gonna buy that lead set above and try it all again.

Once i've put the carb back together.   :lol:Oh and yes it's an early car.
