What shocks to get, gas or oil?

Post

I've been looking at new shocks for the front of my 1983 1.8GTI but not sure what to go for. One of the struts has started leaking oil and I've got it all in bits to change the strut tops so I might as well replace the shocks while I'm at it! I want to keep it standard (not lowered or anything) and the springs are good so I'll be reusing those. The struts themselves are quite rusty so I was gonna replace the shoks and struts together and was looking at some Bilstein B4 strut/shock units that are gas filled. I then good Googling and now I'm not sure whether to have gas or oil struts. The difference is £40 per strut from classic-vw.co.uk and I was wondering if anyone could give me a few tips. I like to drive it enthusiastically but it only does about a 1000 miles a year so is it worth the extra £40 for some gas shocks?
Thanks.

Well, when I bought my 93, 10 years ago it had the original Oil filled struts.

I have since replaced them with GAS cartridge inserts, and I do like the ride, I prefer OEM stance, as it isn't so low to get out of….and the Cushiness of the smooth ride.

Lowering isn't my forte, I drove low cars in my Youth.  Now I enjoy a smooth non-choppy ride.

It only takes me about 30 minutes per side to swap the strut carts out…. but then I have 30+ years experience of swapping them out.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

As I understand it,( which may be wrong) gas shocks are still oil filled with a bit of gas to stop the oil frothing. But what is a fact is that the gas makes them want to be extended all the time, This adds a bit of initial resistance to compression, when hitting a bump for example, so I think plain oil filled would make for a more comfortable ride, with gas shocks for a more sporty ride.
