I'm trying to get my golf working again and have come across this plug adjacent to the clutch cable. I can't find any mating socket for it. Could somebody give me a steer please?

That is a vacuum switch that controls the gear change indicator lamp, not often working. It should go in the vacuum line that runs to the vac advance on the dizzy. If you have a full line running to the dizzy I wouldn't worry about. If you search on here for 'gear change indicator' or 'shift light' you'll probably find some info on how it should work.

That's great, thanks, also there is another plug just above in my picture. Can't find a home for it either

if your box has been changed for a none 1.8GTI version it will only have a simple reverse light switch

I've checked the top of the gearbox, and there are only two vertical connectors on it, so I guess it has been changed at some time..I did hurredly check it was a five speed box !!

I find it much easier to be helpful on the forum than FB! Could be an age thing…..
