engine identification .... is this a Mk1?

I have a T25 transporter but the original engine had to be replaced.
The replacement is not from a T25. I have a vague memory of it being a Golf MK1 but looking at internet pics of those I think not.
So does anyone know the engine shown in the picture? It's a 1.9 diesel.
The reason I ask is that I had to have the injection pump repaired and on putting it back in had to rotate the pulley to expose each of the 3 bolt positions through the pulley gaps…. and I managed to slip the timing belt 1, 2 or maybe 3 notches. So I need to find out how to reset the timing. And indeed how to properly rotate the belt without it slipping!
