It sounds stupid of me, but assume you have checked car for oil level and any leaks? Also is engine noise normal or any bad noises? If so don't drive without investigating.
My oil light used to come on, but a proper pressure check showed it not to be low oil pressure but an electrical fault. Do hope yours is the same! and that the engines fine.

The oil buzzer and light only come on if the revs are above 2000rpm, the sensor is just above the oil filter and possible white in colour? Might be worth to change that 1st to see if any difference and if not it may be your wireing as looking at pictures from other threads who knows what's happened to your fuse box or fault on the instruments.
If still getting the problem then it's low oil pressure, easy job to change the oil pump, drain oil, drop sump, remove oil oil pump, prime and fit new pump, fit new sump gasket ( my be upgrade to a rubber gasket) fill with oil and hope it work.

One way you can check the speedo cable is working is drive the car a little with out the instruments in the car and you should see the square centre of the speedo cable rotate, if it does not spin around the there is a problem with the cable or the cog has come off the end of the cable in the gearbox.
Not sure about oil buzzer, when my oil pump was failing the buzzer would come on every now and then but only when driving the car, if I stopped the car and restarted it the buzzing would stop for a couple of days or sometimes a couple of weeks then buzz again, I fitted a new oil pump and it stopped buzzing.
A new oil pump may not solve your problem, mine had covered 200,000 miles and was 20 years old so that is why I changed mine but I did change the sensor 1st.

With the Vent removed, and the tube out of the way wiggle your arm in the opening and feel the connection of the speed.
Your Speedo cable may either screw on, or CLIP. The Clip ones will pop off is you look at the cable sideways in the engine compartment, or hit it by mistake.
If you have the 2 piece cable, One cable in to the O2 counter box, then one out to the speedo. The o2 boxes are known to be flaky, (if you have a OXS light on the cluster) then you usually have this counter box, that you have to reset every 30K mile…
You can replace the 2 piece cable with a one pice out of a 90's Cabriolet, but you will have to leave the counter box installed to reset the light….

As Mark says keep at it, if you ever think these cars are too old to run every day now just have a drive in a Mk4 or ask someone with a newer VW if they've had any big repair bills, you'll soon go back to the Mk1.

Brian, my first car was a 1961 Frogeye, I went with a friend to see a Triumph Herald he was interested in and noticed the Sprite behind the garage, all interest was lost in the Herald, I bought the Frogeye for £80 and a friend of mine lent me some of the money and we drove it home that evening, I was 18 and it was 1969. It turned out to have an 1100cc engine, the small main bearing version, 10CG wasn't it, but was I chuffed with it. If a car of that concept, points ignition, SU carbs, a heater you had to lift the bonnet and turn a tap to turn on, etc were available now I would buy one tomorrow.

Hope you get it sorted soon. As Mark said earlier, don't give up. They are great fun to drive and quick enough to get the adrenaline going every now and then! I have plenty of challenges with mine and Mark usually helps me out as well and as Cedar says, newer cars cost a fortune as well. I spent over £2000 and repair bills on the wifes car last year and in the end I sold it because I couldn't trust it anymore. At least on a Golf you can repair it yourself and it's also a reasonably sound investment.
Good luck, I hope you get it sorted soon.

My Brother has a 60 Bug-eye 948cc, as that is what they were called here. I bought a 58 Bug-eye in about the same year for 50bucks US. It was hot wired and ran….948CC engine, and I have the original Window Sticker, that showed the 50 dollar optional Heater….LOLOL… That car is in a BARN in Illinois under a tarp, and everything else is in Peach Baskets and Boxes wrapped in Grease and waxed paper… The entire wiring harness was removed, and my dad and I made a new one out of the old my brother has been storing that one for over 45 years….He still has his as well.
My second was my 67 MG Midget Wire Wheels.
My third 72 Rover 3500S….. I loved that car….as well.
Now back to our regularly scheduled thread…

Hello guys need some help just fitted speedo and the oil light is flashing, on standstill everything seems fine but when when driving the oil light flashes and a humming / buzzing noise comes from the dash, just need help what it could be my speedo meter stopped working to and that when the noise started and light came on all help appreciated thanks
Guys first you changed the speedo set where previous it worked ,you may have installed a faulty unit ?
Remove edge connectors on the clocks clean contacts and try again
The system works with two switches one on head the other on oil filtering housing coded black and white
Both are different pressures setting and also switch opposite
So when engine running I thick one switch is closed the other open.
You cannot disconnect either because when you turn the ignition on the light won't flash at all,
One switch just puts the light to flash when engine running the other does same and puts on a buzzer over a certain rpm
My guess is the instrument panel is faulty or the connections are dirty
From memory regards
Andy
