Noisy engine following oil change.

I fired it up and it sounded awful. I switched off the engine immediately. I ordered a new oil pump a fresh oil which I've fitted today. I did notice the dip stick guide had broken in the middle so I replaced this too and when I inspected the old oil I'd taken out there was a few small fragments of the orange plastic on the gauze in the funnel when I drained off the old oil into a container.
Worryingly it's no better. I haven't changed the oil filter but plan to do that tomorrow. Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

I would get a new filter, fill it with oil before I fitted it, take the plugs out and spin the engine over on the starter for a bit before starting it.
Thanks for getting back. Yeah I'm picking up a filter this morning and I've always filled them to the top when I've done previous oil changes without any problems. I'll do the spark plug thing as you recommend too. What baffles (and worries me ) is that I've done countless oil changes and never had an issue like this. Here's hoping its just a rogue oil filter. Thanks very much again for your suggestions,
Any more help would be really appreciated

Try a new oil filter and use Mann or genuine VW filters only.
I would just remove the rotor arm if you want to build up oil pressure before starting the car as it's easier then removing 4 spark plugs.

I replaced the Mann oil filter with a Bosch one. Result - instead of rattling like a bag of spanners the engine started to make a very very worrying knocking. The red oil warning light went from permanently on to flashing on / off. Spoke to the very helpful guy at classic VW parts ( thanks very much if you're reading) and he suggested the knocking may be the cheap replacement oil pump I'd used so I refitted the original VW oil pump. Result = still knocking.
Spoke to my friend who's a mechanic of 25 years and has countless mk1's said it didn't sound good and it may be useful to decide where the knocking was coming from , top end or bottom end.
Fired it up for what I thought would be the last time before an expensive engine rebuild and after a few seconds the knocking stopped and the engine returned to the reassuring sound I recognised after 7 years of ownership.!!! What a relief.
Rang my friend up to tell him the great news and he said what's probably happened is that it'd just taken longer than usual for the oil filled buckets in the cylinder head, to fill up and quiten down the engine. Ironically, cos I'd turned the engine off immediately the horrible noise happened and , understandably, I'd not allowed it to run long enough . If I hadn't and let it run on a little longer the oil would have been given time to circulate and fill up and the engine would have quietened down eventually. Its easier to say than do when its never done it before and it's sounding like an old diesel taxi thats clocked up 500 k miles !
One thing I noticed was the engine seemed to be able to get the oil round quicker with the Bosch filter on compared to the Mann one.
Anyone doing an oil change in the future shouldn't panic if the engine sounds noisy on start up.

All have the valve and I have used them all with no blinky oil light when oil is up to temp at idle.

If you get the flickering oil light from hades change your filter as Bosch filters have been redesigned and they aren't as good a brand as they once were.

Apologies, I should've said the blinking light went out at the same time as the engine knocking stopped. It hasn't come back on since that moment and I've since done 100 miles.
To be fair, I used a Mann filter last year and the year before. However, this has frightened the life out of me and will choose to stick with Bosch or Mahle maybe. I guess others will choose to do thr exact opposite !! Each to their own I suppose.

Friends don't let friends use Generic, Fram, or Bosch filters.
