Hi guys.Hoping someone can shed some light.Am currently waiting delivery of MK1 GTI.Registered 1978.Partially dismantled. The seats are missing.
trying to locate correct replacements.Obviously they will be retrimmed,so condition not important, yet shape obviously is.Were the early GTI seats the same shape
as the standard ones?Spent a day trying to compare pictures as yet wthout sucess.Any help gratefully appreciated!

I think the headrests May have been slightly different, but that might just have been on earlier non GTIs.

dubboy should know the answer .

Thanks for that.If its just head restraints that are different, life will be easier!

This might help with rebuild of 1979 Press car, as you can see the headrests are more rounded than later cars.

coomo  those seats are out of a cabriolet probably. There is a difference between the headrests from an S1 GTI  to an S2 GTI (hatchback) I think the 78's differed again and had the vinyl on the back of the seat coming up and over the top under the headrest whereas the 79 seat was like the later seats where the front cloth went under the headrest.

I will attest that all the Seats I have owned (standard, and sport) had material on the seat, and Vinyl on the sides and rear. Even the "Leather" front had Vinyl on the sides and rear.

I think it all depended on the year and seat style if the material in the center went over to the top or stopped at the top.

I know that my 81 Diesel 4dr LS had velour on the seat bottom and the seat back, where the piping went on the edges is where it changed to Vinyl.
