Torque settings for sump bolts - Mk1 Campaign

Hi guys,
Going to put a new sump on this weekend.

Have the sump and a rubber gasket.

Haynes manual (the Brown manual) says:

Socket head torque = 5 lb/ft or 8Nm
Hexagon head torque = 14 lb/ft or 20Nm

I have typical bolts == Hexagon head so that means 20Nm.

However did search on here and someone recommended 87 lb/in which equates to 10Nm.

Want to get this right as over/under tightening can cause leaks or damage.

Any thoughts?

Hi

Bolts are M6 with hexagon head.
8 Nm is more than enough.
And torque the bolts gradually and in a crosswise sequence.

20 Nm is used for M8 bolts.

Always done 7-8nm here.

Thanks guys - 20Nm did seem a bit strong given there are about 20 bolts.

Will go with the 8Nm.

Just to add - with a rubber gasket - not going to use any sealant - heard horror stories of sealant getting into oil ways and pump!

Any views on sealant?

I replaced the sump on my caddy and also put I rubber gasket in with no sealant. No probs here yet as I also read about possible problems
