Strut Brace

Post

Hi All,  I am wanting to fit strut braces on my golf 1.8 GTI 1991 Cabriolet, & was wondering if there are any about which suitable to fit on to my car. I would prefer top & bottom. The only reason I am asking this is I read some where on here that an OMP 1 did not fit a car which had 020 gearbox, it was the bottom strut brace. Any advise & and places I can get these from would be great. Don't want to go paying too much for these as well. Thanks in advance.

A upper bar, and possibly a "K" bar is all that you really need.

Hi All,  sorry for late reply, so I have a 5 speed gear box manual (don't know what gearbox it is) so am I better getting both top & bottom or just one should be sufficient?  If so which one & where would be the best place, Ebay as Deano777 states?

There is a K-bar on eBay:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GENUINE-VW-GOLF-MK1-CABRIO-SPORTLINE-RIVAGE-FRONT-LOWER-BOTTOM-STRUT-BRACE-K-BAR/133022388140?hash=item1ef8c08fac:g:i0kAAOSwBDVcszbN

Not cheap. People say they are good. I can't comment as I have always had one.

Does a '91 Cabi not come with a K-bar?

When the steering wheel was first put into use in automobiles, it was called the whip. The term has now been generalised to classify any automobile.

No, the 90, 91, 92, and 93 that I have owned or own, didn't come with any Strut bars, upper or lower.

I'm fitting this one to my 1988 Mk1 cabriolet GTi and there's no problems fitting it as I've test fitted it.

It does not fit my 1978 Mk1 Scirocco as there is a bracket which holds the exhaust manifold downpipe in place as the Scirocco has the older style 6 bolt exhaust manifold.

Forgot to mention as there are 2 types for the front bottom strut brace, 1 with a bend in it and the other is a straight one.

Mines a manual gearbox, standard 020 Gearbox.

Post up a picture of your gearbox, top pic, bottom pic and if you can see the flat area near the starter motor there should be a code stamped onto the gearbox.

or have a look here, does it look like this?
scroll down the page and the yellow square in the picture show you where the gearbox code is.

I've got a straight OMP on mine, 5 speed manual box.
Its tight but doesn't foul anything.

On a cabby the upper braces will have no effect at all due to the 2 RSJ's between the rear struts and under the dash, will be looks only

Yes that's a standard 5 speed gearbox, ACD code.

I did notice you are missing the plug to cover the timing marks on the fly wheel, it's on top of the gearbox.

Shop around as lots about.

The OMP strut brace will fit or the K-bar one mentioned in a previous post.

I fitted mine yesterday

Also drawing hot air as you don't have the air pipe that connects to the air box from the front valance. You may already know, but just wanted to check.

I have not actually fitted mine yet, due to get all the little bits done for the summer in the next few weeks.

Although I did ask the question when I bought it and you use the old bolts.

Hope that helps?
