Help
Hi all,
I'm having problems with my rack moving side to side when cornering, it feels like the car wants to go straight. The rack is moving through the bushes, both bushes are brand new and tightened as much as I can get them. I read somewhere that heat from the dp can cause the rubbers to soften whilst driving?
Anyone had this problem? It's really spoiling the driving experience. 😒

I would say the new mounts aren't as tight as you could get them.
They do settle in and have to be re-tightened I have seen this personally on a replaced rack and new mounts.
It could also be that the new mounts are OEM close but not quite right.
Racks do not move at all once the correct mounts are on and the brackets tightened.
The other question that I would have to ask are the mounts moving on the Rack Brackets or is the Rack moving in the tightened bushing.
It could be that you have then swapped as the left side is different than the right.

Right 175422884
Getting them one backwards is one way your rack can slide through the mounts as one side is bigger than the other internally.
I would suppose that you could wrap the rack or wedge it tighter in the mounts with rubber inner tube from a Bicycle tyre. Which would give you more biting power.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?
They all start with GOOD Grounds.
Where are my DIY Links?

Yeah sounds like wrong bushes or wrong fitment of the right ones. It should be positively clamped and not move at all.

Thanks lads. I didn't realise the brackets were different, thus could well be the problem. I'll try and swap them over tomorrow.

I'm curious.. How did this pan out? I have a similar problem I hope could be bad bushings.. I really hope it's that and not something worse!
My whole steering column feels like it "snapped in two" and it "moves, rattles and makes banging noises"..

Well, I have the bushes in the right place, so it's not that. What I did find though is that nearly all the nuts and bolts had come loose a little bit so there was some movement there. I've replaced everything with nyloc stainless items, I'm not sure if that is the problem.

Check the bottom bush on the steering column, grab hold of the end of the steering column inside the car and UJ joint and give it a good wobble if there is play and rattling between the shaft and column the bottom bush has gone as they are made of plastic and live just above the big Spring you will see down there.Don Miller said

When mine went I could feel bumps and knocking on the clutch pedal as it attached to the steering column, when I took the bush out most of it fell on the floor in bits and ball bearings went every where.
You need to remove the steering wheel and stalks, Mark/paint a line where the UJ is lined up on the shaft as its a spined shaft and your steering wheel will be off when you put it back together then undo the bottom bolt, replace the steering wheel loosely and loosen the ignition barrel you may also need to prise open the UJ joint a little to pull the shaft out via the steering wheel but it's best to get some one else to do this while you check at the UJ that it comes apart.
Prise what's left of the old bush out and lightly tap the new one in then put it all back together.
I did find removing the seat easier to work down there as there's not much room.
