Starting Issues

I am having major issues starting my 1986 GTI. It turns over ok and will eventually but very reluctantly  start. Thereafter it  runs ok but a bit on the rough side. Should I so much as touch the accelerator it will stall immediately and thereafter be a beast to restart.

Any ideas as to what could be causing this would be very gratefully received. Cheers!

Once you start it, if you let it just sit and idle for 10 mins or so, does it improve once warmed up I.e. temp gauge is active and in the middle of its range roughly?
