Speedo working, Odometer not working

Hi, two years ago i followed the very useful guide on here on how to take the dash and instrument panel out to repair my non-working odometer (speedo has always been ok). I found the small red plastic cog on the odo was loose with a slight crack in it. As recommended, I superglued it back on the metal shaft.

Worked for a while but odo has stopped again (speedo still fine if a little jittery at times).

I think I'll need to do it all again but want to buy a replacement drive cog so i don't ever have this again! I think perhaps the crack in mine has progressed.
(As an aside, I did replace my front wiper motor afterwards which involved moving the speedo cable around a lot to gain access - not sure if this did some damage…?)
Anyone know where to buy a replacement cog or any other advice?

Are you referring to the drive wheel at the cables end, which goes into the gearbox?

The drives are coloured intentionally, there's a cream coloured one too… each denotes the gearing ratio for your particular application, so stick with the one you originally had.

Before you start to take anything apart, have a good look at how it's attached first, the drive pulls off but there's a little circlip (#6) holding it that can be a pain to remove.

If you lose it, it's not that easy to replace, I believe even new speedo cables don't include them meaning you have to reuse your existing one.

If your drive is failing / cracked, be careful extracting it in case any parts fall into the bell housing.

Hello! Unfortunately not, my printer packed up. I think you can buy similar repro ones on eBay, not sure how much of a perfect fit they are, however!

Look up on ebay 14 tooth vw mk1 odometer gear,  if you refer to a us web site ie:  get the correct tooth count.

Does anyone in the UK/Europe know of a supplier of a similar part?
I did look on ebay but they're about £50 inc postage - and out of stock anyway…

(I did think about buying an old speedo, taking it apart and getting the gear from that - but no guarantee it won't be an old, cracked gear too.)

Been a while but having another go at this. Interesting my previously glued up old red cog is actually fine. What is happening is the shaft its mounted on is moving a few mms left/right, meaning it doesnt always engage with the worm gear, hence lack of mileage change




My current idea is to push it to the right so it engages at the opposite end of the shaft from the red cog - where it pokes through the retaining hole. Then perhaps glue a very small plastic washer on it to stop it moving to the left again and popping out. Good idea or something else.

I do actually have my replacement 3d printer gear from Etsy but didnt know whether to fit it as my preivous repair looks good…

IIRC the red gear was more towards the frame as yours don't look close enough in and would allow lateral play.

Hint going back when you replace your face plate.
align the needle to the right of the stop at the dot. then gently lift it over the dot, and it should be at the correct alignment for true 0 and the register of the speed will be correct.

Yes thats the issue. Its sliding laterally slightly and disengaging from the wormdrive. My thought was to push it through fully and stick a star washer on the other end to stop it sliding out/around - if that makes sense?

Just push it in tighter and a drop of Super glue. to hold it there.

Sorry, i think we’re not understanding each other! The actual shaft is sliding meaning it could maybe pop out at the other end if it moves too far to the left. Hence why i thinking of putting some sort of fixing on that end. Hopefully thats clearer [emoji6]

Thanks. Yeah ive measured the shaft at 2.8mm so will get 2.5 and 3mm ones and see if i can squeeze a 2.5mm one on there.
One other question. When i disabled the cluster these two small plastic pins fell out. They’re not threaded so wondered if they’re needed?

From the parts diagram, it seems these are the buttons for adjusting the clock

Using a drill bit holder as a drift and a pin hammer, I got the M2.5 star washer on there. It’s pretty solid so hopefully solves it!
