Running issues with my 1.3
Hello all,
So lately i have been having a few troubles with my golf
It started off that my car would suddenly cut out when stopping at junctions or traffic lights, would only happen every now and then, embarrassing but not the end of the world. I found i could hold it off if i kept my foot just slightly on the accelerator It then became a more regular occurance.
Then one day it started to lose power when accelerating, however when i pulled over and turned the engine off and on it was fine. However this began to happen more often and i soon took it to a garage to be looked at.
They told me it was the condenser, and they also adjusted the points gap. Great. Drove home fine with no issues. The next day i had an hour drive to do, was fine on the way there, accelerating was fine, stopping at junctions was fine. I left the car for a few hours then came back and had troubles starting the car, it would turn over fine, start, then revs would drop and cut out. I found that if i put my foot on the accelerator for 5-10 seconds then it would eventually idle fine, however there would be lots of jumpy revs and popping from the exhaust, the car would judder and 'kangaroo' from the first 20 seconds driving. I managed to get home fine thankfully. I took it back to the garage and they said it was probably a dodgy part and they would refit one.
So they put the replacement on and again, all fine driving home. I left it in my garage for 2 days and now it wont start at all!
The car turns over but doesn't even attempt to start, the revs barely move.
I am going to speak to the garage again today to see what they can do, but is there anything i can try in the mean time?
Thanks

Hey mate, that's a can of worms you've opened in this post.
First impression if it were mine is the fuel supply.
Not let the tank get low and now your sucking up all the dirt into the carb?
It's this first thing I'd focus on because I'm a firm believer of if it doesn't work, don't start with removing the engine and rear axle etc…
Hopefully it's something simple.

Thanks for the reply mate.
Well that was my first thought being low fuel, I noticed the inline fuel filter was pretty dry when i went to start it and it was on low fuel (but no lower than I've ever let it get.
Anyway filled it up with 5 litres of fuel and didn't make a difference. Fuel filter has fuel in it, and no crud as far as i can see, so i assume that's OK? Is there anywhere else it would be visible? I've done the old magnet and string trick in the past and it never really had loads of rust in there, just the odd small piece when i first did it.

If the fuel pump was knackard would it pull up the fuel to the inline filter? or would it not even get that far?

Not sure how the carb is fitted on small block engines but if the same as big block there is a rubber flange which the carb sits on, the flange can split and if the carb wobbles on the flange it lets in air and messes up the mixture.
Not sure if this fits you car?

So a bit of closure to this, towed it back to the garage the other day, they said the point gaps was slightly out so they re adjusted it and it was fine. I took it for a drive that evening and it seemed to still be sluggish and lose power in 1st and 2nd gear still. However after driving it around all weekend and filling her to the brim with petrol. I am hoping it just had some crud that needed cleaning out as it now seems to be totally fine.
