going to tackle the roof lining soon, I've bought one from vw heritage, they were very helpful, spoke to them on the phone just to make sure I order all parts required, was going to get the missus to help out, is this likely to turn nasty?? She does have a temper that one!! Any advice (concerning the lining) would be really appreciated. Dean

Dean. Look at my project thread I done it about 8 weeks ago and it was not as bad as I thought. Top tip mask the outside of the car over as the spray glue can go everywhere also put seat covers on if they are left in. Take your time and don't panic it can be easily peeled and restuck on the edges if it gets a little crease. Front to rear first followed by the sides to get the tension. A pillar while screen is out. B and c pillars while the rear quarters are out. Have fun it is an all day job.

Thank you for the tips, I'm kind of looking forward to it, maybe I'll ask a mate, (not one of my close ones) to give me a hand instead of the missus, if not it could work out to be one of the most expensive head linings ever!!!
I'm sure a kettle, radio and a bit of time should do it, any recommendations on glue??

Did start to fit one once, got it hanging from the rods, pulled it in a couple of directions to see how I would attack it, then gave up and sold the car. Just don't have the patience these days. Good luck.

Personally I wouldn't recommend spray glue. It goes everywhere and, in my experience, doesn't like the heat so can lead to sagging. Not saying it will but it might do.
A freind of mine used spray glue for his 60's daimler and the headlining just fell off. As such he went and bought some of this:

and I did the same.
You spread it on to the lining material and then spread it on to the car. Let the fumes come out of it (keep lots of fresh air around you or you'll be seeing little Unicorns ala Deadpool) and for it to mostly dry and then stick the two together.
Be careful though as once it's stuck it's on there. It will come off if you need it to for a bout 2 mins or so. After that it's on there!
Get lots of razor blades. They are the best thing for doing all the trimming of the excess. You don't need any pressure as you do with a stanley blade so no marking the paint.
I also lined the roof panel, A, B and C pillars and across the top of the panel between the B and C pillars with some 5mm foam.

We also added some trim bits between all the sections, just to 'finish' it a bit
It took us about 14 hours to do it all and we had no windows in and no interior at all.
Take some measurements as to how far it comes down the 'B' pillars before it get glued and where it is glued across the rear panel above the tailgate.
Unfortuantely I didn't do this and it's glued a bit too far, so it's a bit different to how VW did it.
Might also be worth getting some new rubber/plastic ends from Classic VW for the steel bars in the roof as mine all broke when removing them.

Meant to say, the trim bits are made from some small bits of vinyl with a bit of wire inside.
Cut the wire so it's the same length as the distance between the seals. Cut the vinyl longer and about 2" wide. Glue the inside faces of the vinyl. Add some small guage wire in the middle and fold the two face together.
The glue into place on the headliner.
We then glued the A, B and C panels overt the top.

I used the spray glue from heritage. It was fine with me. Light sqeeze and like silly string. Heavy sqeeze and it fans out for areas like c pillar. Be careful if you use brush glue as too much can soak through and stain the lining.

wow, thank you all very much, i now feel a lot more prepared, the 5mm foam sounds like a brilliant idea and i'll try the heritage glue, what about the stick on sound deadening on the inside of the roof before the lining goes in? good or terrible idea?? I've spent a lot of time trying to reduce sound, I'm all polly bushed and once the new gear selector kit is fitted she should drive and sound like a new car, i've
just got to remember she's not new and has no ABS!!! thank you again. I'm very new to this forum/club and you've been a great help, once i get the hang of it i'll post a few pics

I lined my roof with the foam after removing the factory stuff.
You'll need a wide ended paint scraper and some white spirit to get the tar they used to glue to the bits of sound deadening in with.
It goes everywhere as well. So i'd suggest taking out the seats too.
I cut one large piece of foam. Ironically the width of the roll of foam is just about right for the width of the roof.
Cut it a bit overlong and trim to required length.
Get one of these too

I use HTCA all the time, use a thin layer on both sides leave to flash off touch dry then press together.
I use a plastic disposable knife to spread, that way any overload can be spread out or off. Not a fan of spray glues. But yeah you High Temp Contact Adhesive.
