Removing glass - How?

Post

The tinops nearly stripped down all but the glass. When it was badly painted before it looks like all new seals were used on the windscreen, rear glass, and side glass. I'd like to re-us it if possible

Any suggestions as how to remove the glass without cutting off the seals?

sides and rear you can just push out from the inside, no problem.  front it can be done, but to be 100% safe cut the seal as the screens do NOT bend well

I tried to carefully push out my front screen as it had a small chip which would fail the MOT so I was getting a new screen so I thought I would save the screen as a spare but it cracked pushing it out, talking to the chap fitting the new screen he said using my feet to push it out was the wrong way, lots of screw drives along the seal on the inside to work the seal out is the way to go, its time consuming but possible to get the screen out in one piece.
I'm not taking any responsibility if your screen breaks using this method, a new seal is a cheaper option to a new windscreen….

yes wasn't really clear in my post, do NOT try to push it out from the inside with your feet, that will result in disaster

For the sake of £23 quid I would just cut the seal:

cut the inner lip that the screen sits inside from the outside, you can cut a groove in it without going all the way thru then just peel the lip away. keep at it till you can just lift out the glass, then remove the remainder of the seal from the frame

Cheers guys, appreciate the replies.

I was going to cut the front one off as I didn't fancy breaking the screen.

This is how I did it on my caddy… I had a number of bits of small, thinish  bent metal, nothing too long or sharp.

Go inside the car and ease the rubber seal away from the body and slide a bit of metal between the rubber and the glass.  Start at one corner and go along the top and then down both sides, keep a couple close to the top corners. When you've gone all the way round or run out of bits of metal, ease the rubber out of a corner and very gently push.

At this point you will hear a tinkling sound which will be either the metal strips falling out as the screen comes free or (if you've pushed too hard) the screen falling onto the floor and smashing into a millions pieces !

might be worth pricing up new screens, if yours is a bit chipped then you could just get yourself a shiny new one. i got a green tint with blue sunstrip one for my mk2 for around 80 fitted (mates rates, but still it wont have been that much cheaper!)

since they made the mk1 chassis for as late as if not later than the mk2 you should still be able to find screens for them

The last seal I bought was advertised for cars without wind deflectors, I didn't want to refit them, so there must be a difference in that respect. The last screen I bought I got from a main VW agent and it was just over half what a  screen specialist quoted me, both supply only, worth a try.

think the seller was confusing wind deflectors with the chrome trim. there is no difference for wind deflector fitment

New seal for the front screen on the way

Thanks for the tip Blah blah  (got a black front carpet here if you want it. Not great but might clean up ok)

rubjonny  hmmmm shiny new screen. I think you're right they aren't too bad. My Bro in Law priced em up for his cabby when it was getting near 'going on the road finished, but it's not finished, finished' and I think they were around £100 or so.

cedar that's a thought. Would never have thought about going to VW. Ta

VW heritage sell new screen for £80, they have gone up as I was looking in the summer and they was £60? I guess it's the Brexit again!!!

I went through my insurance but I used a local company recommended to me who deal with classic cars and found out he also has a Mk1 Golf, they have delt with all the paper work and I paid my insurance excess.

I called National Windscreens for a quote if I paid them direct and not used my insurance they wanted £265!! so I would not use them…
